Job summary

We are looking for a passionate individual who is required to fill a Locum Consultant post within the Transplantation & Hepatobiliary Surgery Department at St Jamess University Hospital.

The Liver transplant programme in Leeds is well established and is the third-largest liver transplant unit in the country. Leeds is leading nationally in Living Donor Liver Transplantation. Annually, the unit performs 130-140 adult and 20 paediatric liver transplants. The Transplant & Hepatobiliary unit in Leeds delivers over 1000 major procedures annually

The successful applicant should possess FRCS (or equivalent) and must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should have established skills in Liver Transplantation, Organ Retrieval and General Surgery. Experience in splitting livers for adults and paediatrics is highly desirable. Experience in paediatric liver transplantation is also desirable. There is a general surgery component to this job which will involve dealing with benign biliary disease and other aspects of general surgery. Also, the successful candidate is expected to provide cover for the National Organ Retrieval Service. Leeds Teaching Hospitals currently provides cover for Organ retrieval for 39 weeks annually. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research interest is desirable

2.OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

To support the delivery of Liver Transplantation, Organ Retrieval (NORS) and General Surgery services at Leeds Teaching Hospitals and achieve and sustain performance against key national waiting time standards.

To contribute to the role of Leeds as a training centre for Transplant surgery

To improve the efficiency and productivity of the Transplant surgical service

To help sustain Leeds as a centre of excellence in specialist care.

To provide support and clinical expertise to the teams based in referring centres

To maintain and develop clinical research in Transplant surgery

To contribute to and improve the quality of Undergraduate and Postgraduate training in Liver transplant and Organ retrievals

To improve the quality of care and increase the scope for innovation

To participate in a 1:8 Liver Transplant Consultant on-call rota to provide in-hours and out-of-hours transplant and organ retrieval services.

-Around 150 Adult & Paediatric Liver Transplantation with scope to do 175 transplants a year

-Around 200 Organ Retrievals

-Over 300 Liver Resections

-Active Live Donor Liver Transplant Program for Adult & Paediatric recipients within NHS

3.REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

3.1General Training and Qualifications

The appointee must hold accreditation in HBP and transplant in the one the UK Royal College or equivalent, and have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) if currently in a training programme within the UK.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicants must provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant Royal College at the time of application, in order for their application to be progressed further.

3.2Experience

The appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of transplant and appropriate experience in Liver Transplant and Organ Retrieval. And in particular Liver Splitting and use of machine technologies in organ preservation and assessment . It is desirable that the candidates have experience in the conduct of clinical trials.

3.4Clinical Audit

The appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead in the following:

Mortality and morbidity meetings;

Clinical audit programmes;

Development and application of agreed clinical guidelines.

This is to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity. It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).

In the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.

4.TEACHING

The Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and all Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.

The post-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinical area basis.

The post-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.

The appointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in the Local Education and Training Board.

The job plan review will take place annually, normally with the Clinical Director or Lead Clinician for Transplant & Hepatobiliary unit. The annual job plan review may result in a revised job plan.
