INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Clinical Teaching Fellow role exists to support, develop and deliver undergraduate medical education within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (LTHT) to University of Leeds Medical Students.

This role is based at The Undergraduate Hub (The Hub), St Jamess University Hospital (SJUH) but will involve work across the Trust sites. The Hub plays a crucial role in the student experience at LTHT and is well recognised by students for not only delivering a quality core curriculum but also as a place to receive individualised learning and welfare support. Over the past 12 months, the Clinical Teaching Fellows within The Hub have developed a varied teaching programme, underpinned by the teams dedication to innovation and collaboration within the Trust.

The Clinical Teaching Fellow role is an exciting role which provides a range of excellent opportunities for clinicians to develop their teaching, leadership and personal development skills.

DUTIES OF THE POST & Levels of Responsibility

Student Experience

1. Scope to work with all years of undergraduate medical students on clinical placements, with the predominant workload being 3rd year students

2. To deliver teaching for The Undergraduate Hub programme in line with the University of Leeds MBChB curriculum:

a. The Hubs current programme themes include:

History and examination skills

Practical skills and procedures

Clinical reasoning

Communication skills

Prescribing

Recognition and Responding to Acute Patient Illness and Deterioration (RRAPID)

Inter-professional learning

b. Teaching methods currently in use:

Face-to-face small group classroom or bedside teaching

More bespoke 1-to-1 sessions

Simulation

Bedside

3. To participate in ongoing programme evaluation and development

4. To ensure education is delivered to the highest quality, in line with The Hub ethos and departmental strategy

5. To provide individualised support to students, for example to:

Appreciate and adapt to the needs of individual students and their unique circumstances

Identify students who may be struggling or have additional/different learning or support needs

Refer students as appropriate to services providing further support

Research and Innovation

1. Where need is identified, innovate and develop new teaching methods and materials

2. Develop and deliver teaching with new technologies that will facilitate teaching

3. Contribute to research, audit and continuing professional development (CPD) activities

Personal Development

1. Support is available for study towards Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education (or diploma modules if PGCert completed)

2. Management and leadership

o Active engagement with The Hub management team

o Collaboration with the wider education faculty both within the Trust and University

Further Potential Opportunities

This is a 12 month fixed term contract to provide an out of training opportunity to develop education skills

Qualifications

Essential

• MBChB or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable

• Teaching qualifications, courses or prizes

Experience

Essential

• Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
• Evidence that present achievement andperformance is commensurate with totality of their period of training
• Evidence of self-reflective practice, audit or quality improvement work

Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills

Essential

• Full GMC registration, with completion of the Foundation Programme in the UK by intended start date
• Eligibility to work in the UK
• Ability to provide complete details of employment history
• Is up-to-date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
• Demonstrates clarity in written/spoken communication, being able to adapt language as appropriate

Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills

Essential

• Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students in a clinical setting
• Willingness and enthusiasm to develop teaching skills
• Experience in providing feedback
• Ability to foster a supportive learning environment
• Awareness of different teaching methodologies
• Able to work well in multi-professional teams
• Excellent time management, organisational and prioritisation skills

Desirable

• A regular commitment to teaching
• Previous experience of simulation-based medical education (or similar)
• A passion and enthusiasm for medical education
