Job summary

This is a fixed term contract role with an initial contract end date of 31 March 2025. We anticipate details of an extension will be shared at least one year prior to the expiry.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is seeking a highly motivated and adaptable individual to lead the Communications, Involvement and Development team.

The role of Assistant Director - Communications, Involvement and Development is a key one with oversight of three distinct but diverse functions, and plays a role as part of the leadership of NIHR. The role would suit a dynamic individual who enjoys working across several areas.

This is an exciting time to join NIHR as we look to expand many of our activities and deliver an excellent experience for those on an NIHR academic pathway.

Main duties of the job

As Assistant Director for Communications, Involvement and Development, you will be responsible for working with a team of talented individuals and develop and implement strategies across communications, leadership development and patient, public, service user and carer involvement and engagement.

The post holder will also have a national role; working on and leading cross-NIHR projects and initiatives relevant to their portfolio.

Job responsibilities

Member of Senior Management Team of the NIHR Academy Executive

The post holder will be a member of the Senior Management Team of the NIHR Academy Executive and in that role will be expected to:

Provide support for the Deputy CEO and the CEO through contributing to strategic developments and initiatives; taking oversight and co-ordinating the day-to-day activities of the NIHR Academy Communications, Involvement and Development Programmes of work

Deputise for the Deputy CEO and the CEO at national meetings, as required

Take lead responsibility for translating national strategy as it relates to the Communications, Involvement and Development support for the NIHR Academy Programmes and devising and managing implementation plans on a national scale

To take overall responsibility for ensuring the delivery of a portfolio of NIHR Academy development and support activities

Take lead responsibility for developing the NIHR Academy communications policy and style in line with new national initiatives

Take lead responsibility for developing the NIHR Academy PPI strategy in line with new national initiatives

Contribute to the high level and strategic financial management of the NIHR Academy

Implement and manage change, devising and communicating new policies where necessary

Lead new initiatives, as they arise

Communication

The post holder will be expected to:

Lead the development of the NIHR Academy communication strategy and policies

Prepare reports and papers for strategic and policy meetings and publication

Liaise with other national programmes, NIHR and Department of Health and Social Care staff, the academic community as necessary

Deliver presentations to national stakeholder groups and relevant conferences

Lead responsibility in the development of briefings requested from Ministers offices and other government departments; responses to Parliamentary Questions, and Select Committees

Provision of leadership to the Communications, Involvement & Development Team

The post holder will be expected to work with the Programme, Evaluation and Impact, and Information Services & Systems teams to support:

Provision of a good quality support service to all current NIHR Academy Programmes

Development of effective communications and engagement mechanisms to promote the work and achievements of NIHR Academy and its members

Development of improved methods of involvement of NIHR Academy members and PPI representatives in the work of NIHR Academy and the wider NIHR

Development of an enhanced portfolio of development and support activities for members
