Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the current team within the Leeds Dental Institute as a Band 2 Facilities Porter.

Facilities Porters work as a highly valued member of the Dental Team and applicants should be reliable, enthusiastic, professional and well-motivated team players whilst also being able to work on their own initiative. Applicants must have good communication and interpersonal skills.

As a Facilities Porter you will be responsible for delivering exceptional standards of safe, effective care to ensure that it consistently meets Trust standards. Delivering a high standard of quality service and providing a safe, clean environment for patients and staff.

There will be opportunities for continuing professional development linked to a personal development plan.

Training will be provided.

The post is fulltime - 37.5 hours or part-time/job share would be considered.

Core Working hours - Monday-Friday - 7.00am - 5.15pm on a variable shift pattern (TBC)

Main duties of the job

Working under the supervision of the Facilities Supervisor, porters assist in providing an efficient day to day portering service for patients and service users, transferring patients and all manner of stock items to and from all departments across the site.

Duties include hands on general portering, patient transfers, collection and return of bloods and pathology specimens, waste and linen management, deliver and sort internal/external mail and medical records, collection and delivery of pharmacy and sterile supplies.

Providing a meet and greet service based at reception, dealing and directing enquiries from the public/staff and offering assistance/information.

Undertake non -routine portering duties such as office furniture and equipment movement, check all modes of patient equipment are safe and in good working order, cleaning, replace medical gas cylinders, exchange flow metre valves on cylinders where necessary and provide support to security staff where required.

Complete all relevant daily documentation in compliance with relevant statutory legislation, local codes of practice and quality control procedures.

Safe and efficient transportation of patients, porters are required to assist with all patients moving and handling from bed/chair to trolley/chair, and associated medical equipment. Additional knowledge of emergency procedures and a calm disposition is required if/when presented with an emergency situation.

Collection and returns of blood and pathology specimens products from wards and departments ensuring if there is protocol in place for chain of evidence that this documentation is completed.

Removal of rubbish and soiled (infected) linen and waste to designated areas in line with Trust Infection Prevention and Control Policy.

Loading and unloading of vehicles when required e.g. furniture, waste, etc.

Report any security matters which require attendance and ensure the environment is secure out of hours.

Utilize the departments mobile communication system which co-ordinates the daily tasks which require undertaking.

Provide a meet and greet service based at reception, dealing and directing enquiries from the public/staff and offering assistance/information.

Ensure equipment is in good working order and use it to maximum efficiency. Reporting faults and breakdowns immediately to the Facilities Supervisor.

Operate electrical equipment for the movement of waste, goods and around hospital site. To ensure that any minor/major defects are reported immediately e.g. damage to body work, accidents, and punctures.

Replace medical gas cylinders, exchange flow metre valves on cylinders where necessary, collect and return cylinders to the gas store.

Moving & handling of (heavy, cumbersome over 15kg) i.e. materials; patients, goods and valuables.

Collecting and delivering trolleys, wheelchairs, x-rays/confidential medical records, pathology reports from all departments and clinics to all wards.

Collecting and delivering of all drugs/medicines from pharmacy to all wards.

Deliver and sort internal/external mail.

Provide equipment when necessary to support crash calls.

Provide directions for the fire brigade when needed.

Clean areas/equipment in line with infection prevention and control practices/policy, portering duties must take priority.

Provide appropriate response to any alarm upon activation i.e. fire alarms in case any portering assistance is required.

Demonstrate work activities to less experienced colleagues

For staff working at peripheral sites (not LGI or SJUH), change curtains.

To be responsible for working with colleagues to maintain and improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service users and support the induction of new starters.

Ensure that all tasks are carried out in compliance with relevant statutory legislation and local policies and codes of practice including Health and Safety, COSHH, Information Technology, Infection Prevention and Control, Medical Gas, and in particular by following agreed safe working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident Reporting System, after completing all relevant induction and training programmes which generally take a period of weeks, which includes local shadowing
