We are recruiting motivated, caring and compassionate individuals for the role of Apprentice Clinical Support Worker for our Adult clinical areas.This full-time (37.5 hours per week) apprenticeship is undertaken within a fifteen month fixed-term contract, and provides an ideal opportunity to begin your healthcare career at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Part time hours can be considered, but you would need to work a minimum of 30hrs per week.

You will be required to work a combination of shifts as well as regular study days

Main duties of the job

As an Apprentice Clinical Support Worker at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, youll learn how to provide patients with essential care, helping them with washing, dressing, eating, moving around or using the toilet. Over the 15-month programme, youll make our patients time here more comfortable and will become a valued part of the nursing team.

Spending most of your time on a single ward or clinical area, youll work with doctors and nurses, observing things like blood pressures and changes to weight and temperature. Its about giving you experience to equip you for whatever comes your way. There will also be coursework and practical assessments so you can demonstrate your learning.

2. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

The jobholder will be undertaking a training programme within the Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust (LTHT). The training will be delivered through formal education either in-house and or via external providers, and clinical placements. They will be involved in providing direct and indirect care for patients in support of and supervised by a registered nurse or midwife and where identified as appropriate by the supervising registered nurse or midwife, an assistant practitioner or clinical support worker.

It is expected that the apprentice will commit to self-directed study and successfully complete the training programme within the contract period.

The jobholder will contribute to the maintenance of an environment for effective care.

The jobholder must be 18 years old or over

4. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Education and Training

To participate fully in the training programme for the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Healthcare Support by:

i) Attending formal study sessions

ii) Be willing to undertake self-directed learning

ii) Completing all tasks and assignments

iii) Applying skills and knowledge to patient care in the clinical area

iv) Contributing to regular performance and progress reviews

To successfully complete the academic elements of the programme as specified by the employer and the training organisation.

To complete successfully the clinical competencies related to national occupational standards as specified by the employer and the training organisation.

To achieve a minimum of Key Skills Level 1 in numeracy and literacy and apply this learning in the workplace.

Maintain high standards of care

Maintain a safe working environment, reporting incidents, accidents, complaints.

Understand the need to maintain and respect patient confidentiality

Complete mandatory training.

Participate in workplace evaluations and appraisals of performance.

Undertake duties on different wards/depts as directed through the training schedule.

Assist other healthcare workers to support patients with hygiene and elimination needs, oral/eye care.

Assist other healthcare workers to support patients in expressing their healthcare needs.

Assist in the correct handling and measurement of bodily fluids and in the dispatch of specimens.

Record observations and findings on fluid/food/stool charts.

Assist patients in selecting meal, drinks and snack of choice and assist with eating and drinking, where necessary.

Weigh patients and record results.

Collect notes/X-rays/patient information from locations across the Trust.

Collect medications from pharmacy (but not controlled drugs).

Assist in the welcome and reception of patients into the clinical area.

Assist the registered nurse in the care of deceased patients.

Assist in the safe disposal of linen and clinical waste from the clinical area.

Develop good working relationship

Develop good communication skills that demonstrate courtesy and respect

Form good relationships with other team members including answering the telephone and passing on messages

Support effective teamwork by undertaking other clinical activities, under direct supervision, which would be expected of a Band 2 Clinical Support Worker

To be alert to issues of risk and concern about care provided raising any concerns observed via the Trusts Whistleblowing Policy and supporting processes.
