2. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY
The
jobholder will be undertaking a training programme within the Leeds Teaching
Hospital NHS Trust (LTHT). The training will be delivered through formal
education either in-house and or via external providers, and clinical placements.
They will be involved in providing direct and indirect care for patients in
support of and supervised by a registered nurse or midwife and where
identified as appropriate by the supervising registered nurse or midwife, an
assistant practitioner or clinical support worker.
It
is expected that the apprentice will commit to self-directed study and
successfully complete the training programme within the contract period.
The
jobholder will contribute to the maintenance of an environment for effective
care.
The
jobholder must be 18 years old or over

4. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF
RESPONSIBILITY
Education and Training
To participate fully in the training
programme for the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Healthcare Support by:
i) Attending formal study sessions
ii) Be willing to undertake self-directed
learning
ii) Completing all tasks and assignments
iii)
Applying skills and knowledge to patient care in the clinical area
iv)
Contributing to regular performance and progress reviews
To successfully complete the academic
elements of the programme as specified by the employer and the training
organisation.
To complete successfully the clinical
competencies related to national occupational standards as specified by the
employer and the training organisation.
To achieve a minimum of Key Skills
Level 1 in numeracy and literacy and apply this learning in the workplace.
Maintain high standards of care
Maintain a safe working environment,
reporting incidents, accidents, complaints.
Understand the need to maintain and
respect patient confidentiality
Complete mandatory training.
Participate in workplace evaluations
and appraisals of performance.
Undertake duties on different wards/depts
as directed through the training schedule.
Demonstrate compassion in all
interactions with patients.
Demonstrate respect for patients with
regard for privacy and dignity.
Act in such a way that always
safeguards the health and wellbeing of children & vulnerable adults .
Is familiar with and adheres to, the
LTHT safeguarding policies.
Support team members with
appropriate clinical activities under direct supervision
Contribute to the movement and
treatment of patients to maximise their physical comfort.
Check patients skin condition and
inform staff of any changes.
Assist other healthcare workers to
support patients with hygiene and elimination needs, oral/eye care.
Assist other healthcare workers to
support patients in expressing their healthcare needs.
Assist in the correct handling and
measurement of bodily fluids and in the dispatch of specimens.
Record observations and findings on
fluid/food/stool charts.
Assist patients in selecting meal,
drinks and snack of choice and assist with eating and drinking, where
necessary.
Weigh patients and record results.
Collect notes/X-rays/patient
information from locations across the Trust.
Collect medications from pharmacy
(but not controlled drugs).
Assist in the welcome and reception
of patients into the clinical area.
Assist the registered nurse in the
care of deceased patients.
Assist in the safe disposal of linen
and clinical waste from the clinical area.
Develop good working relationship
Develop good communication skills
that demonstrate courtesy and respect
Form good relationships with other
team members including answering the telephone and passing on messages
Support effective teamwork by
undertaking other clinical activities, under direct supervision, which would
be expected of a Band 2 Clinical Support Worker
To be alert to issues of risk and
concern about care provided raising any concerns observed via the Trusts
Whistleblowing Policy and supporting processes.

7. INFECTION CONTROL
The
jobholder must comply at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS
Trust Infection Control policies, in particular by practising Universal
Infection Control Precautions. Hand hygiene must be performed before and
after contact with patients and their environment.
8. HEALTH AND SAFETY / RISK MANAGEMENT
All
staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and
improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service
users. This includes complying at all
times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies, including Health
and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed security and safer
working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident
Reporting system

jobholder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role.

11. SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
i)
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Frequent standing, sitting,
walking, kneels and crouches to attend to patient needs. Responding to
changes patient condition.
Patient
Care (e.g. drug administration). Shift working.
Moving
& handling of patients and equipment daily:
Patients
- 10-120kg (with lifting aids). Equipment - medical equipment, specialised
mattresses (weight 1-20kg).
ii) MENTAL EFFORT:
Frequent
mental effort/concentration required in relation to responding to and meeting
patients nursing care needs (e.g. for 8-12-hour shift).
Follows
routine and/or direction by registered practitioner
iii)
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Exposure
to difficult situation including death and dying, distressed patients and
relatives/carers.
iv)
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Temperature
- should be controlled but may experience hot or cold work environment.
Smells
- dealing with body fluids.
Violence
& Aggression - may experience violence and aggression from patients and
or relatives or carers.
Infection
Control - exposure to patients with infections.
