Job summary

The post is a permanent part time contract for for 1 session (3 75 hours) to provide support for our medical retina team in our virtual medical retina and Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscopy (BIO) clinics. The post is for an optometrist with medical retina knowledge and experience to deliver a range of advanced, specialised, complex and non-routine work, with responsibility for patient examination and complex clinical decision making, regarding on-going management or treatment of sight-threatening eye diseases in conjunction with our Ophthalmology team.

Specialist Optometrists may work alone or in a multidisciplinary environment alongside Consultant Ophthalmologists, in order to discuss and seek guidance on management of more complex cases if required.

Typically, the post-holder will make decisions in conjunction with their Ophthalmology colleagues regarding initiation and review of medical, pharmacological and surgical management and will be expected to understand and manage the interface between medical and surgical management of eye disease.

This post is suitable for a registered hospital optometrist with medical retina knowledge and experience. The post is intended to provide enhanced optometric clinics

A degree in Optometry, GOC registration, professional post-graduate specialist qualifications and previous experience as a Hospital optometrist in a range of core and enhanced optometric roles is essential.

Main duties of the job

This post involves a specific enhanced role assessing patients of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the virtual medical retina clinic and supporting our diabetic BIO clinics for patients who have been unable to be screened effectively in the diabetic photographic screening clinics.

You may be required to assess and manage up to ten virtual medical retina patients a session.

You may be required to examine and manage up to ten BIO patients with Volk slit lamp biomicroscopy to ascertain if they have diabetic retinopathy.

About us

You will join our busy, friendly Optometry team working at the centralised eye department at St. Jamess University Hospital. The Optometry department consists of the Head of Optometry, Principal Optometrist, Optometrists, Specialist Optometrists, Advanced Specialist Optometrists, Pre-registration Optometrist, Senior Dispensing Opticians, Optical Services Officer and Optical Services Clerical Assistants. The Optometry department supports the Ophthalmology Department consisting of twenty eight Consultant Ophthalmologists with full supporting medical staff, specialising in anterior segment, refractive surgery, paediatrics, oculo-plastic surgery, glaucoma, uveitis, neuro-ophthalmology, medical retina and vitreo-retinal disease. Optometry services are provided at St. Jamess University Hospital and Wharfedale General Hospital. There is a large Orthoptic Department involved with the training of under-graduate orthoptic students.

2. JOB PURPOSE

1. Clinical Governance and Clinical Audit

1. To undertake systematic and critical analysis of the quality of care in the Optometry Department (including diagnosis, treatment, outcomes and quality of life for patients) as delegated by the Head of Optometry and Principal Optometrist.

2. To participate in clinical audit and contribute to collaborative undertakings with other departments providing ophthalmology services.

Managerial

1. To support optometry staff and be responsible for the provision of optometry services in the absence of the Head of Optometry or Principal Optometrist.

2. To work closely with the Head of Optometry and Principal Optometrist to ensure professional standards are achieved and maintained at all times, for the provision of highest quality hospital optometry services.

3. To contribute to the planning and organisation of a broad range of complex activities, some of which may be on going, which require regular review.

4. To contribute to delivering income generation and cost improvement programs.

5. To ensure the accurate collection of appropriate data within the Department.

6. To work closely with the Head of Optometry and Principal Optometrist in order to implement and encourage best practice wherever possible.
