We are looking to appoint a motivated individual as a Site Clearance Operative to work within the Estates External Environment Team. The team are a small group who work trust wide; the new post holder will be predominantly based at St James University Hospital.

The position is 37.5 hours per week worked 5 days over a 7 day period including weekends which are worked at normal time (7.5 hour days) 10 am till 6 pm.

The post holder will also be required to participate in the winter on call rota for gritting and snow clearing between November and March.

The successful candidate will be expected to be able to carry out site clearance activities to maintain the external site areas in a clean and tidy condition including sweeping roads and footpaths, removing debris and litter etc, clearing road gullies and removing debris from roof areas.

They may also be expected to undertake works outside their core duties at times of operational necessity.

The successful candidate will be required to drive trust vehicles therefore a full drivers licence is an essential qualification for this position. Training will be given on the machinery they will be expected to operate.

Essential qualifications - Formal Qualifications (CSE/GCSE) and Current British Full Drivers Licence.

Desirable Qualifications - Knowledge of Health & Safety, Moving & Handling, COSHH.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be required to ensure the Trusts site grounds and gardens are maintained to a high standard in accordance with legislation and codes of practice.

The work includes the sweeping of roads, kerb edges and footpaths, litter picking, emptying litter bins, removing debris from the trust grounds and roof areas. The cleaning of road gullies, roof gutters, fallen leaves and undertaking snow clearing, gritting and other routine winter duties.

They may also be required to assist the grounds operatives with landscaping including paving, walling and minor tarmac repairs, as well as some machinery and equipment maintenance.

They will need the ability to communicate both verbally & written, be able to operate a smart phone which the trust uses to allocate jobs and to facilitate immediate response to urgent requests and emergency breakdowns. They should be able to work under their own initiative and as part of a team and to carry out strenuous physical tasks and work in adverse weather conditions.

They will be required to undertake all monitoring procedures for hand arm vibration and noise exposure in accordance with the Health & Safety executive requirements including completion of exposure logs.

This job can involve prolonged periods of physical activity and therefore the post holder must be capable of undertaking such duties.

About us

The External Environment team are a small group within the Operational Estates Department; it consists of 10 staff members including site clearance operatives, grounds and gardens maintenance operatives as well as a bricklayer and head gardener. The team are led by an Estates officer and are an integral part of the Estates Trust Wide Building team.

The external environment team are responsible for providing a pleasant environment for the staff patients and visitors of the Trust.

This is a hard working team who have a physically demanding role working in all weather conditions including working out of hours to keep the hospital open in adverse weather

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

a. Ensure the timely and correct performance of routine and periodic duties.

b. Learn new techniques and undergo training as necessary.

c. Ensure that the post holder maintains a high standard of personal hygiene, and are smart in their appearance and wear the correct form of uniform/protective clothing.

d. Ensure that all information is collected and recorded in the event of any accident and that appropriate action is taken to prevent any similar occurrences.

e. Keep the manager abreast of matters affecting the delivery of the service and to make recommendations on improvement.

f. Utilise the Works Management System for recording, updating and auditing Estates records.

g. Undertake snow clearing, and gritting and other routine winter duties.

h. Liaise with the manager on staff welfare and related problems.

i. Promote good housekeeping to ensure that the external hospital environment is kept clean and tidy ensuring timely removal of any refuse/rubbish including pressure washing and removal of blood, vomit, excreta and discarded hypodermic syringes and needles.

j. Ensure that all equipment, machinery and materials are kept clean, properly maintained and in a good state of repair, reporting any defects immediately enabling use to maximum efficiency.

k. Carry Trust communication devices to facilitate immediate response to urgent requests and emergency breakdowns

l. Participate in appropriate on-call / shift rotas, subject to appropriate negotiations, and be prepared to work such hours that may be required in an emergency

m. Assist with landscaping, including paving, walling etc.

n. Interpret and work from all instructions and drawings

o. Responsible for working with colleagues to maintain and improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service users.

p. Ensure that all tasks are carried out in compliance with relevant statutory legislation and local policies and codes of practice including Health and Safety, COSHH and in particular by following agreed safe working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident Reporting system.
