Mechanical Shift Engineer Band 5 Enhancements Built-In Overtime + Regular Overtime

The role of Mechanical Technician working shifts four on four off consisting of two days followed by two nights is a rewarding and entrusted position within the Estates team at St James Hospital

The successful candidate will work as part of a shift team which can be challenging & reliant upon the individual's ability to assess a situation or breakdown & make safe prior to planning a repair scenario

They will form part of a dynamic team committed to pushing the boundaries, working together & achieving the best outcome for our patients

You will work on complex systems carry out dynamic risk assessments work autonomously organise & rectify reactive works & carry out statutory planned maintenance items to ensure maximum availability of equipment to minimize downtime

Main duties of the job

As a Shift Technician you will play a crucial role in the smooth operation, maintenance of all facilities plant & equipment throughout the LTHT Estate

From fault finding repairs & installation you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety efficiency & functionality of our facilities

You will undertake activities which require comparison of a range of options & complex facts requiring analysis to resolve technical issues in multifaceted equipment/situations many which have direct impact on patient safety & the built environment

The successful candidate will work as part of the shift team alongside a electrical counterpart

The position covers a wide spectrum of responsibility supported by a On-Call Estates Manager out of normal working hours

First point of call for Estates related issues & emergencies such as fires & floods/equipment breakdowns & as such a successful candidate will need to have good communication skills & be able to work under pressure as part of a team with a solid engineering knowledge base

The role will focus upon:

Making safe first & foremost then working on engineering solutions to enhance & support clinical colleagues in treating patients

The successful candidate will join a dedicated team of Estates staff responsible for the larger estate including the maintenance and repair of utilities and engineering services. They will support the clinical teams out of hours, utilise the BEMS for fault diagnosis, liaise with outside companies to support on drainage issues, undertake training to release trapped lift passengers ensuring that there are comprehensive shift handovers and maintain a shift log for audit purposes and engineering follow ups as required.

You will need a thorough knowledge across a range of procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and experience. Problem solving and fault diagnosis will be key to support clinical colleagues. Working to Statutory requirements and regulations, learning new techniques and a willingness to undergo further training are also fundamentals of the role.

In addition to this they will have other responsibilities supporting with the diagnosis and resolution of problems on complex plant, ensuring compliance with relevant Health and Safety and statutory regulations. They will plan and organise works, working with other in-house staff and contractors. The ability to communicate well and negotiate with internal/external agencies is fundamental to the role.

Provide specialist support for emergencies, support the Estates management by organising and supervising Estates work taking place in clinical areas, liaising with users to organise shutdowns of critical and complex support systems.
