Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Assistant Business Manager to join our Research & Innovation (R&I) Business Team. This is a varied and rewarding role supporting the delivery of highquality research across multiple clinical teams and key support services. You will play a central part in managing research finance activity at both individual participant recruitment level and overall study level. A key focus of the role is the development, maintenance, and oversight of finance trackers, ensuring robust financial governance and clear visibility of study performance.

The successful applicant will be educated to degree level or hold an equivalent management qualification. They will be highly numerate, confident working with complex financial data, and proficient in using Excel to manage and analyse information. A customerfocused approach and strong interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage competing priorities. The role requires a solid understanding of business management and financial processes within a large and complex organisation.

The post is fixed term for a period of 12 months.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will play a key role in developing and coordinating financial and administrative services that support the delivery of commercial clinical trials. This includes developing and maintaining accurate finance trackers for all commercial trials, ensuring a robust audit trail for income distribution to key support services and external partners, and producing reliable income forecasts and financial reports for the Research Finance Team.

Working closely with the R&I Business Managers, the postholder will contribute to a professional and efficient business management function. They will help identify opportunities to streamline processes, enhance service delivery, and support the effective financial oversight of the clinical trials portfolio.

As part of the central Research & Innovation (R&I) infrastructure, this role is based within the R&I Business Team, located in the Research and Innovation Centre at St Jamess Hospital. The team is friendly, collaborative, and fastpaced, bringing together a mix of Business Managers, a Grant Funding Manager, Contracts Manager, Performance Manager, and experienced administrative staff. Together, the team provides the core business functions that underpin R&I activity across the organisation, ensuring highquality support for research delivery, financial management, contracting and operational performance.
