Job summary

Research Nurse (Adult Cardiology) Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Permanent position with fixed funding to 31/12/2024 to support the BHF Find AF trial after which the post holder will either be deployed within Cardiology Research or the wider Research & Innovation Team.

Full time: 37.5 hours/week.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Clinical Research Nurse based in Cardiology Research Team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals to work on the Future Innovations in Novel Detection for Atrial Fibrillation (FIND-AF) study funded by The British Heart Foundation Bristol Myers Squibb Cardiovascular Catalyst Award and Leeds Hospitals Charity. This post is a collaboration with the NHS and University of Leeds and will involve working closely with University of Leeds colleagues. Monday to Friday with flexible working hours between 08:00 and 18:00.

The FIND-AF study has already developed an algorithm to identify patients at high risk of developing atrial fibrillation in the next six months. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rhythm. It may not cause any symptoms but increases the risk of a person having a stroke by about five times. A stroke can result in permanent disability, such as paralysis, loss of speech or even death. If atrial fibrillation is identified early a person can take a medication (called an anticoagulant) to reduce their risk of having a stroke. The study will implement the algorithm in primary care locations in Yorkshire.

Main duties of the job

Eligible participants will be sent an invite by their GPs to consent to take part in the study. Following consent, participants will use a handheld ECG monitor for up to three weeks. The post holder will support the FIND AF study team in the planning, scheduling, conduct, recruitment, patient care, support and data collection required for the FIND AF study. They will be directly involved in set up of Primary Care practices, answering of patient queries, processing the handheld ECG monitors, data collection at the Primary Care practices and supporting the study Cardiology Registrar with participant visits as required.

Working effectively and proactively with study colleagues and collaborative partners including staff at primary care practices, the individual will adhere to agreed study pathways and processes to support site set up, participant recruitment and derive accurate, timely and robust data capture. The post holder will be involved in ensuring that research undertaken within the department safeguards the wellbeing of patients and is conducted within the confines of ICH Good Clinical Practice Guidelines for Research, EU directive, UK Governance Framework and other relevant UK legislation pertaining to the conduct and delivery of research.

Exceptional IT and organisational skills are essential for this role. In addition the candidate will have excellent communication and time management skills.
