Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen at NPIC (National Pathology Imaging Cooperative) based at LTHT for a Digital Pathology Scientist, the candidate will work closely with the Research Operations Director and Scanning facility team and wider Innovation team to realise the research ambitions of NPIC and its partners. NPIC works collaboratively with Hospital Trusts, Universities and commercial companies ranging from spinouts and SMEs to large multinationals to expand to use and impact of digital pathology and artificial intelligence and as well as the development of quality assurance tools for digital pathology. Our digital pathology scientists plays a vital role realising our ambitions by operating our unique digital Pathology scanning facility that consists of (currently) of 9 of the most modern scanners currently available from 6 different manufacturers.

Main duties of the job

As part of this post a successful candidate will be expected to have a solid understanding of digital pathology both technically and scientifically and understand how DP can have impacts on development of AI. Although experience working on multiple DP platforms or DP in research, is desirable it is not essential, experience of working on a DP platform is essential. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day running of the scanning facility, ensuring all scanning are run and maintained correctly as we as coordinate with engineers when required. The candidate will also be expected to be able to independently organise work and workflows from multiple projects and make decisions on priorities. The Successful candidate will also be involved in discussions with external stakeholders regarding research and scanning projects as well as expected to provide reports to senior management.

As a Digital Pathology Scientist you will be a fully competent member of the department. Normally working as part of a team, you will be expected to perform a wide range of specialist technical investigations. At other times you may be required to work alone and independently,. Working on the NPIC project department you will have the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute towards research projects which require digital pathology solutions. You will be expected to apply professional judgements and specialist skills to technically complex and sometimes difficult situations. You will be required to communicate highly complex information, potentially related to patient management and care, to colleagues, healthcare staff and other organizations.

In order to carry out the job sufficiently and effectively you will have significant experience in the use of high-throughput digital pathology scanners, be this in an accredited clinical setting or academic environment. You will have demonstrable competencies and specialist knowledge in all aspects of the digital pathology discipline through extensive practical experience. in house training and structured study and will continue to develop your skills and knowledge subject to the requirements of continuous professional development (CPD). In addition, basic computer skills are essential to carry out your work. End-to-end knowledge of the pathology pipeline from sample receipt to potential image analysis/reporting would be desirable.
