Job summary
An
exciting opportunity has arisen for a part-time Smoking Cessation
Practitioner (SCP) to be involved with a research project that includes
providing personalised smoking
cessation support to smokers attending for a community based Lung Health
Check. The successful applicant will join an established team of 5 SCPs.
Funded
by Yorkshire Cancer Research, the Yorkshire Enhanced Stop Smoking study
(YESS) is a cessation service that is embedded into the Yorkshire Lung
Screening Trial (YLST); one of the largest UK randomised trial of CT
screening for lung cancer.
The
SCPs will provide smoking cessation support to patients within a community
based mobile scanning unit in the Leeds area, in their own homes and via the
telephone plus some office-based duties. The office base is in the chest
clinic at Leeds General Infirmary.
The
successful applicant will receive service specific training to ensure that
they are able to undertake all aspects of cessation support.
Main duties of the job
Explain,
advise, plan and deliver smoking cessation support in accordance with NHS
Stop Smoking best practice and the National Centre for Smoking Cessation
(NCSCT) standard treatment programme.
Communicate, over the telephone and
face-to-face with patients to ensure that they have access to appropriate
information.
Provide or receive complex,
sensitive or contentious information where persuasive, motivational,
negotiating, training or re-assurance skills are required.
Maintain and deliver compassionate
patient focused care in accordance with LTHT guidelines, policies, values and
behaviours.
Provide assessment, planning,
implementation and evaluation of cessation support for patients, ensuring
documentation standards are upheld in accordance with LTHT guidelines in a
timely way,, whether written or computerised. Act in a way that safeguards the health and wellbeing
of children and vulnerable adults at all times. Be familiar with and adhere
to the LTHT safeguarding policies.

Job responsibilities
The
post holder will be responsible for the safe delivery of direct and indirect
care and associated source data collection for clinical research studies
undertaken in the department, in accordance with the UK Medicines for Human Use
Clinical Trial Regulations.
The
post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning, coordination,
implementation and evaluation of individualised care plans for clinical trials
participants. Additionally, they will provide patient centred care and support
clinical trial participants focusing on high quality patient experience.
The
post holder will be involved in raising awareness and embedding research within
LTHT and offering people opportunities to take part in research as part of
their standard care pathway. They will act as a member of the multidisciplinary
team, advising and supporting the clinical teams with research related matters
and will also maintain their clinical skills.

The
post holder will work within a specialised environment caring for participants
enrolled in clinical research studies.
The
exact dimensions of the numbers and types of studies may vary in accordance
with the dynamic nature of the research programme and specialist clinical area.
This
is a unique post that will involve working on the Yorkshire Lung Screening
Trial (YLST), the largest UK randomised trial of computed tomography (CT)
screening for lung cancer. Due to the unique nature of this post there will be
some time spent working in a mobile screening unit, and some visiting
participants homes. The office base for the study is within the chest clinic at
Leeds General Infirmary.
The
mobile unit will be based in supermarket car parks around the Leeds area and
will see invited, eligible participants for consenting, lung health checks and
CT screening for lung cancer. The team on the mobile unit consist of the
research delivery team (research nurses and clinical trials assistants),
smoking cessation staff and radiographers. Following full study specific
training your duties will include providing behavioural and practical support
and the dispensing of nicotine replacement therapies to support patients to
stop smoking.
