This
8 PA role is required to fill this new post within the Haematological
Malignancy Diagnostic Service at the St Jamess University Hospital.
The
Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service is one of the largest specialist
Haematopathology laboratories in Europe and currently serves a population of 6
million across the North of England. The laboratory has extensive facilities
and has high levels of expertise in flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics,
immunohistology and informatics. The service provides fully integrated
reporting compliant with the improving outcomes guidance. There is an active
programme of research and development across many areas of this service which
includes involvement in national and international clinical trials. A major
priority is developing diagnostic platforms to support precision medicine and
several initiatives are underway.
The
successful candidate will play a full part in the provision of the diagnostic
service, including support of multi-disciplinary teams across the region and
will be expected to contribute fully to the research and development plan for
the department. This will offer the opportunity to develop personal research
and clinical interests. The successful candidate will work as part of a team of
7 consultants (including this post) and 6 consultant and principal grade
clinical scientists.
Main duties of the job
The
successful applicant should possess FRCPath (or equivalent)
and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at
the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the
UK. In accordance with the consultant
appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the
Specialist Register.
This post is
suitable for candidates from either a histopathology or haematology background
who have skills and expertise in diagnostic Haematopathology. The post will
require active engagement in research and development and prior experience and
specialist expertise in a particular area is highly desirable. A strong commitment to undergraduate and
postgraduate teaching is required.
Consideration will be given to applicants
who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job responsibilities
In relation to this post, this appointment is for a
Consultant Haematopathologist and is a new post following a reconfiguration of
services internally in our Haematology department. An individual from a purely
pathology background interested in working wholly in Haematopathology would
also be eligible to apply and in this instance, the clinical aspects of the
post described below could be negotiable. This is a 8 PA appointment to work as
part of the consultant team providing haematology services within the trust and
in particular, will be involved in the provision of specialist diagnostic
services within the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (HMDS).
The post will be based in Bexley Wing at St Jamess
University Hospital. HMDS is an internationally renowned haematopathology
centre serving a population of 6 million across the North of England, and is
one of the largest services of its kind in Europe. The department provides a
fully integrated service compliant with the current improving outcome guidance.
The department has excellent facilities for flow cytometry, the full range of
molecular diagnostics including array based expression profiling and SNP analysis
and next generation sequencing, immunohistology and informatics and the
appointed person would have full access to all these specialised services.
The post holder will work within an experienced team of
around 100 staff including 7 consultants and 6 principal and consultant grade
clinical scientists to process greater than 40000 specimens per year. The
duties will include the final reporting of specimens received within the
laboratory (bone marrow, peripheral blood and lymph node biopsies being the
most common specimen categories), provision of specialist advice on diagnostic
problems and participation in haematology multi-disciplinary team meetings. They
will be expected to have or develop an area of specialist diagnostic expertise
that is complementary with other members of the team. It would be expected that
the appointee would develop and participate in relevant research and
development within these areas.
It is intended that the
post holder will participate in the delivery of haematology clinical services
to a degree commensurate with their above laboratory based duties and their
previous experience and qualifications. The clinical aspects of the post are
negotiable depending on the candidates background. The clinical duties are not
expected to include responsibility for in-patient care.
The successful candidate will be part of a large and established consultant
group delivering the full breadth of haematology services across Yorkshire and
beyond with extensive research activity. The post offers
many opportunities for career development and involvement in research and
innovation. The title of Honorary Senior Lecturer at Leeds University Medical
School will also be offered (see below).
On-call duties
will be for the HMDS laboratory only (see below). There is no requirement for
clinical on-call cover.
