Job summary
We
are looking for dynamic individuals to fill these innovative replacement posts
within the Genitourinary Medicine (Sexual Health & HIV) plus new General
Internal Medicine departments based at the Leeds General Infirmary/St Jamess
Hospital & Leeds Sexual Health and networked HIV clinic sites.
These are the first dual posts nationally with the evolution of GUM as
a Group 1 Specialty following the aims of Shape of Training to deliver a
modern, dual trained specialist and generalist physician workforce. There are
specialty roles in virtual inpatient HIV MDT care; Virology & Complex HIV
Prep MDTs, plus opportunities for special interest development, outreach &
HIV prevention.

Internal Medicine in Leeds your hopes and fears for the first 3 years
Main duties of the job
The
successful applicant should possess the MRCP, MRCOG (if historic recognised GUM
CCT training entry route) or equivalent and should be included on the
Specialist Register in Genitourinary Medicine or within 6 months of CCT at the
time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. They
should also be dual accredited in Internal Medicine. In accordance with the consultant appointment
regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist
Register.
Applicants should have
established skills in Genitourinary medicine (Sexual Health
and HIV)
and its related specialties including sexual & reproductive health,
infectious diseases and public health, as well as appropriate dual
accreditation in Internal Medicine. A strong commitment to undergraduate and
postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable, under the
supervision of Dr Janet Wilson as Research Lead.

who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

These are innovative substantive
posts, each for 9.25 PA for 2 dual -accredited Consultants in Genito-Urinary
Medicine (GUM) and (General) Internal Medicine (GIM), following the evolution
of GUM as a Group 1 Specialty following
the aims of Shape of Training to deliver a modern, dual trained specialist
and generalist physician workforce.
GIM
The newly established
Department of GIM at LTHT, based on Ward J29 at St Jamess University Hospital,
is currently being expanded with the appointment of dedicated consultants,
supported by a lead clinician, service manager and matron within the Specialty and
Integrated Medicine Clinical Service Unit. It provides on-going care for
younger adult in-patients who have been admitted (via the Same Day Emergency
Care Medical Unit or an Acute Medical Unit) with a wide range of general
medical problems. The department has excellent junior doctor cover (at
Foundation, IMT1-3, and HST Registrar level), as well as a dedicated MDT,
including skilled nursing staff, therapists and discharge coordinators,
allowing us to provide timely, effective and safe patient care 7-days per week.
We are also committed to delivering first class education and training in line
with the Internal Medicine Training programme.
These consultants will
also work in Specialty GUM (HIV services based at Leeds General Infirmary Brotherton
Wing Clinic/ spoke site clinics at Dewsbury/ Wakefield and integrated STI &
contraception at Leeds Sexual Health (city centre hub and spoke clinic sites
across the city). HIV inpatient care (led by Infectious diseases) and Internal
Medicine are based at St. James University Hospital.
GUM
The GUM service
comprises the centralised HIV outpatient service based at Brotherton Wing
Clinic, LGI which opened in October 2015; and the integrated Leeds Sexual
Health service whose city centre hub clinic opened in December 2015 at the
Merrion Centre, with further spoke clinics at Armley, Beeston, Chapeltown and
Burmantofts. Each department also houses offices and teaching areas.
July 2015 saw the start
of a 8+ year contract with Leeds Local Authority to provide the integrated
sexual health service following a successful tender process in 2014/15. This
saw integration with Contraception and Sexual Health services and third-sector
provision as part of a consortium between LTH, Leeds Community Healthcare Trust
and Yorkshire MESMAC. Leeds local Authority continues stakeholder discussions
in advance of contract review due end June 2024.
Leeds Sexual Health
provides 60,000 contacts for sexual health and contraception care with resetting
following the Covid pandemic comprising
walk-in and booked face-to-face appointments, telephone appointments and postal
oral treatments, and online STI testing and contraception. There is 6-day
opening at the city centre hub including 8am-8pm access Monday-Thursday, plus
further spoke sites operational around the city.
Leeds Local Authority
is the only high HIV prevalence area in Yorkshire & Humber having exceeded
HIV population prevalence of 2/1000 since 2012, and as such the department has
built up a reputation as a centre of expertise for HIV/AIDS. LTH is the West
Yorkshire HIV network regional centre with an HIV clinic cohort cohort of over
2200. Most of these patients are outpatients but there is a significant
in-patient workload which is managed on Ward J20 at St Jamess Hospital, led by
the ID consultant team, with registrar and junior support from a combination of
ID & GUM teams. After a successful HIV tender process in 2016/17, LTHT also
commenced a hub & spoke HIV service to Dewsbury & Wakefield in August
2017.
