Due to retirement of the current post holder and review of current management portfolios a rare and exciting opportunity for a Clinical Dietetic Manager has become available at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT). Our large friendly department consists of 4 adult teams and 1 childrens team which include many regional specialist services. Our department employs Dietetic Assistants, Dietetic Associate Practitioners, Apprentice Dietitians, Dietitians, an Enteral Feeding Associate Practitioner and Enteral Feeding Nurse Specialists. We are part of the Adult Therapies Clinical Service Unit where our vision is to empower staff to provide the best care for our patients; body, mind and soul.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide operational management, leadership and support to a team of staff based at Leeds General Infirmary and Chapel Allerton Hospital including leading on relevant strategic development, operational policy and clinical pathways. Clinical specialities include neurosurgery and trauma related services, stroke and neurology as well as complex and stroke rehabilitation. You will support our dietitians delivering nutrition education across LTHT as well as the catering dietitian. Leading adult oral and enteral nutrition across LTHT you will have a pivotal strategic role in developing Trust guidelines, risk management and operational support across the Nutrition and Dietetic department working with community partners to review pathways of care. We are on a mission for outstanding Nutrition and Hydration Care at LTHT; Nutrition Mission will be launched November 2023 which you will significantly contribute to in your role ensuring the best care for our patients.

You will support the Nutrition and Dietetic Department to provide regular professional development events, and training to A, B and C placement students. You will be actively involved in the development, implementation and audit of patient care practices as part of Clinical Governance.

Job responsibilities

Manage an allocated budget for human resources and equipment within the specialist area.

Liaise with the clinical management team(s) to provide integrated dietetic care, including input into business planning and service agreements.

Relevant masters level qualifications

Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance and risk management.

Advanced knowledge of current issues in clinical specialist area(s).

Able to lead and motivate a team, demonstrating leadership, initiative and confidence, time management and organisational skills.

Be a pro-active team leader/ member of the Dietetic department at LTHT by leading departmental development projects, attending and participating in departmental meetings and clinical updates.

Demonstrate the ability to motivate team members to achieve individual and team objectives/goals using highly developed motivational and negotiation skills.

Understanding of skills mix within own specialist and wider dietetic team and able to deploy staff accordingly and in response to changing needs. In these situations a range of options must be considered.

Knowledge of project planning and implementation

Able to lead, plan, integrate and review team objectives against wider departmental objectives

Able to lead and implement clinical governance, risk management, quality of care and evidence based practice in own managed specialist area.

Responsible for implementing clinical governance and risk assessment in managed specialised clinical area as part of continuing quality improvement eg advise patients and staff on infection control issues around enteral feeding.

Participate in the appraisal process as an appraiser and appraisee, developing a strategy for personal and continuous professional development, encompassing a portfolio-based assessment in line with national legislation.

Responsible for aspects of student training. This will include liaison with training provider, allocation of student to members of staff, involvement in programme design, clinical supervision and acting as mentor as required.

Responsible for day to day staff deployment and team management, including attendance management and appraisal of staff within the specialist team(s).

Responsible for staff recruitment and selection including presence on interview panels and for development and retention of staff.

Responsible for initiating and enacting Trust procedures eg disciplinary, grievance, attendance management, capability, maternity leave, complaints procedures.

Liaise with CSUs, stakeholders, and other professions regarding service planning and development.

Provide leadership by representing the dietetic department on relevant groups and working parties within the Trust.

Responsible for ensuring team members are safe to practice.

Responsible for handling and investigating complaints and incidents within managed area.

Ensure team members comply with national and local documentation standards.

Involvement in the implementation of the catering strategy, including service delivery and menu planning for patient groups with specialist dietary needs.

Lead service user involvement within team area leading service planning, development and delivery eg patient surveys, evaluation and implementation of findings.

Responsible for motivating staff in a professional capacity to meet team objectives
