Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) currently has a vacancy for a Ward Environment Porter to work Monday to Friday 7:30am till 5:30pm. We are looking for an individual to assist with the efficient running of a busy assessment area. This will include transferring patients to inpatient wards, ensuring patients receive a timely and safe transfer and assisting with cleaning bed/trolley areas. The individual will also assist with the day-to-day cleaning of the department; ensuring equipment is regularly cleaned and ready to use and to maintain cleanliness and tidiness in all areas of SAU. In addition to this, the successful candidate will assist in providing refreshments for patients who are either inpatients on the unit, or awaiting assessments such as sandwiches, hot drinks, and breakfast.

You will be required to work proactively with all of the SAU team and contributing towards providing a safe and efficient environment for patients, staff and visitors.

Main duties of the job

Transferring patients on trolleys, beds or chairs to wards, scans and other departments where necessary. Assisting with daily cleaning schedules of floors, equipment, bed space areas etc. Providing refreshments for patients who are awaiting assessment or awaiting transfers to ward beds whilst maintaining a polite and positive bedside manner.

About us

SAU is an acute assessment area with 5 side rooms, 2 bays consisting of 10 beds, a trolley bay consisting of 6 trolley spaces and a waiting area with approximately 15 seats. It is a fast paced department and candidates will be required to work well under pressure and move around the hospital as required when taking patients, samples etc.

To work as a member of the clinical ward team carrying out the cleaning and the movement of patients, specimens & goods/consumables/drugs between wards and departments. To provide a range of direct or indirect supervised non-clinical support to the professional teams within designated clinical areas.

The role will be supportive in keeping the hospital environment, safe, clean and tidy. The provision of a high-quality support service, responding to patient bed discharge/equipment cleaning and or/ urgent patient equipment/specimen/blood transportation.

The job holder will work within designated clinical areas providing support to the multi-disciplinary teams. Duties will include answering phones, cleaning equipment, setting up equipment under supervision, ordering maintaining stock levels and any other general clinical duties required. The job holder will meet, and greet patients, family or carers and provide family and carer support where asked to do so. The job holder will be a central point of communication between the department and medical physics to ensure equipment is returned, and repaired, and or serviced in a timely manner.

  • Maths and English GCSE grades A to E or equivalent Level 1 Literacy or Numeracy
  • Ability to communicate both verbally in a tactful, compassionate and polite manner, providing reassurance where required, and non-verbally (reading and writing).
  • Ability to communicate and transmit information via telephone, radio & IT systems.
  • Willing to undergo training as required, induction and on the job training as required to be able to perform the role.
