PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Management and Leadership

Be a clinical lead within the Adult Critical Care teams.

To lead operational activities identified in project plans in order to manage, facilitate and implement defined projects targets, notifying the managers when issues or problems occur. This will involve initiating, planning, and organising work schedules and project plans.

Develop effective communication with all healthcare professionals in order to foster a good understanding of clinical systems and the roles and responsibilities of staff who use them.

Identify the risks associated with the implementation of new projects, and to assist the other project leads in monitoring and reducing these risks.

To provide regular updates or progress reports to strategic collaborative groups as required by the project manager and assurance groups.

To appropriately record and where possible address or escalate issues and concerns raised through the course of the project by stakeholders.

To build effective relationships with the managers and staff of designated departments and clinical areas.

To promote and facilitate change projects to encourage acceptance and engagement.

To be a positive role model for all healthcare professionals in relation to clinical practice and clinical change.

Participates in the appraisal process for self and team members

Financial responsibility for ordering stationery, posters etc.; although not actually holding the budget, the post holder will make decisions about purchase of goods volumes and type relating to the project remit.

Acts in such a way that safeguards the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults at all times. Is familiar with and adheres to, the LTHT safeguarding policies.

Raise concerns with regards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrongdoing by following the LTHT Whistleblowing Policy and supporting processes.

To take part in testing relevant software applications, document the results and highlight any concerns that may relate to clinical use. Use clinical experience and judgement to determine the importance of any system deficiencies found during testing.

To use clinical knowledge, judgement, and experience to determine how to configure and use clinical IT systems for clinical processes, particularly where opinions differ on the best approach.

To collate and document feedback, issues and comments from clinical teams and use the feedback and their professional judgement to develop processes and future improvements.

To carry out audit work related to clinical systems.

To assist other clinical leads in analysing new local, regional, and national initiatives and imperatives, relevant to clinical systems and identify responses to them. To share these proposals with relevant senior staff and stakeholders.

To represent the Trust in networks relevant to the Corporate Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals Team agenda at local, regional and/or at a national level. To use these networks to share best practice and to bring information and new ideas back to the Trust team.

To be an ambassador for Adult Critical Care, in particular, when coming into contact with key senior figures within the Trust, and with external agencies, organisations and official bodies.

To support the work of other team members who may work within Corporate Nursing on a temporary basis.

The job holder will perform other duties as commensurate with grade and role as agreed with the line manager.

There may be a requirement for some occasional weekend, out of hours and on call work, local and national travel particularly during the implementation phase of clinical projects.

Education and Training

To deliver presentations, and demonstrate the product to all levels of clinical, administrative, and managerial staff in a manner that is appropriate for the audience.

To facilitate one to one and classroom-based training to staff of all levels including clinicians and management.

To support the preparation of user guides and training materials and provide input into the structure of training sessions.

To complete Mandatory and Priority Training within the specified timescales

Clinical professional practice

The jobholder will assist the Head of Nursing, working collaboratively with clinical colleagues to improve project implementation across the Trust.

To review practice, audit against agreed standards and liaise with nursing staff to ensure the relevant trust guidelines are applied across the Trust.

To review clinical practice on wards and departments. Identify where practice goes outside safe limits and to lead any changes in practice which are needed in order to reduce a risk which has been identified.

To approve requisitions for, posters and leaflets as required.

It is expected that post holder will do up to 4-5 clinical shifts per month. This may vary according to the requirement of the projects.

To keep up to date with clinical practice and to demonstrate and maintain a commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

To fulfil the requirements as directed by the relevant Professional body to maintain and revalidate registration.

Experience

Essential

• Proven clinical & leadership experience which includes managing changing and competing workloads within clinical environments.
• Ability to work in partnership with clinical teams to deliver on Nursing and Midwifery agendas.
• Ability to communicate and deal sensitively with emotive and contentious issues.
• Knowledge of the NHS change and quality agenda.
• Significant experience at Senior (Sister/Charge Nurse) level or equivalent
• Leading teams that are accountable for service delivery
• Evidence of continued professional development.
• Evidence of working in challenging environments
• Experience of leading change projects.
• Experience of developing policies, protocols, and procedures. knowledge of Clinical Audit methods.

Desirable

• Experience of clinical informatics systems
• Understanding of NHS structure, systems & politics.
• Line management of staff

Qualifications

Essential

• Degree or evidence of working at that level.
• Evidence of continued professional development and implementation in clinical practice.
• Registered Nurse, Midwife or Healthcare Professional
• Recognised teaching / assessing qualification.
• Evidence of post graduate education and development

Desirable

• Project management training or equivalent experience.
• Management and or Leadership qualification
• Masters degree or experience of working at that level.
• Qualification in or equivalent advanced specialist knowledge in quality improvement methodology
