Job summary

The NIHR Leeds Clinical Research Facility (NIHR Leeds CRF) is one of 28 facilities funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) to support the safe and efficient delivery of early phase and experimental medicine clinical research trials. The NIHR Leeds CRF supports the development and delivery of over 100 high quality, early phase/experimental research trials per year through its five delivery sites across the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Patients and the public play a key role in our research, not only as participants but also in helping us shape the direction of our work and in the design of research initiated in Leeds. To ensure we deliver our ambitious Patient and Public Involvement, Engagement and Participation (PPIEP) strategy we are seeking to appoint a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Public and Patient Involvement Engagement Officer. This public-facing role will have responsibility for supporting a wide range of activities to deliver meaningful PPIEP across our research portfolios, ensuring that peoples voices are central to maximise the relevance, deliverability and impact across our population and underserved communities.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the PPIEE Manager the post holder will be responsible for the delivery of key aspects of the NIHR Leeds CRF annual plan, especially the workstreams that relate to:

  • Enhance PPIEP and inclusion of underserved groups/individuals: Promoting and supporting public engagement in research through managing

o Multi-morbidity Joint Enablement Group: to explore and develop create priority areas and strategy to develop/attract early phase experimental research.

o Virtual outreach programme: working with local and regional organisations, charities and partners to establish links to develop an inclusive virtual clinical research outreach programme for underserved communities.

  • Promoting and supporting public involvement in research through overseeing the NIHR Leeds CRF Cancer PPIE Group and PPIEP Advisory Group made up of NIHR Leeds CRF public members and Research Champions

Supporting the delivery of the NIHR at Leeds PPIEP strategy (2022-2027) and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion strategy (2022-2027)

About us

The NIHR Leeds CRF has 5 delivery sites across the trust and a core team based at the Research & Innovation Centre (RIC) at St James's Hospital. This post will be based across St James's Hospital (RIC) and Leeds General Infirmary (LGI CRF).

Attract, retain and develop a diverse group of the best multidisciplinary, diverse individuals as researchers

Expand partnerships with public funders/charities/life sciences industry

Develop our leadership contributions to the CRF Network and NIHR priorities

2. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

The post holder will need to demonstrate good project management, change management and leadership skills, to ensure a collaborative approach is taken with and between all relevant stakeholders.

4. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Planning Organisation and Leadership

The post holder will:

Contribute to the preparation of the annual PPIEE annual plan and PPIEE quarterly performance reporting, observing the requirements NIHR Leeds CRF deliverables and the national PPIE Impact Framework

Deliver the elements of the Annual PPIEE Plan, as they relate to:

Public engagement and public involvement, through supporting the development of regional public and patient Research Advisory Group(s) and events.

Supporting community-based recruitment to current and future studies, by co-working with regional and local Research Champions, Public Contributors, and members of relevant study recruitment teams.

Monitor the delivery of the projects mentioned above, which could be complex and span a broad range of partners, ensuring that they are being delivered to agreed time, target, cost and quality standards

Proactively identify and propose areas for improvements, by making recommendations about future courses of action to support the team to achieve its objectives

Liaise with stakeholders and partners to avoid duplication

Support other members of the NIHR Leeds CRF Core team with PPIE issues and activities.

Volunteer management and support

The post holder will:

Manage the recruitment, retention, activity, and development of the NIHR Leeds CRF public and patient Research Champions, focusing on the CRF specialities.

Manage the delivery of the NIHR Leeds CRF PPIEP and EDI SMART objectives. This includes:

o Working with the PPIEE Manager and other CRN Y&H colleagues, identify the most deprived under-served communities/neighbourhoods in the region

o Recruiting and co-working with grass-root community groups (known as Community Partners) and their members, to deliver and mainstream the Multi-morbidity Joint Enablement project and the virtual outreach programme.

Support NIHR Leeds CRF volunteers by applying Safeguarding, Information Governance, and personal Risk Assessment procedures as required

Support the development and updating of the recognition payments process for Research Champions/Public Contributors/volunteers

Other

Work flexibility to meet the needs of the teams workload

Provide cover in the absence of team members

Manage own work priorities, reporting progress to the PPIEE Manager

Travel within the region to Partner Organisations and other partners, Community Partners in particular

Act independently and be accountable for the day-to-day delivery of agreed tasks
