Job summary

We are inviting applications to fill our Locum Appointment for Service (LAS) doctor vacancy at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in Genitourinary Medicine (Sexual Health & HIV).

These are full or part time posts with or without on call and will commence ASAP. They are fixed term until February 2024 initially with potential extension until August 2024 pending national specialty training recruitment outcome.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in Sexual Health and HIV medicine and join a friendly team committed to a high quality, flexible service delivering open access for integrated sexual health and centralised outpatient HIV care within modern premises. There is a regular postgraduate programme within the department and adequate off-duty periods for study.

You will need to be at least 4 years post registration and experience in gynaecology would be desirable. Candidates must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a license to practice by the intended start date.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of this role will be to provide Sexual Health and HIV outpatient clinics for our Leeds Sexual Health (LSH) and HIV outpatient services respectively. LSH is an integrated sexual health service with a city centre hub at the Merrion shopping centre, plus smaller spoke sites across the city where you may be required to attend. Our HIV outpatient service is based at the Brotherton Wing Clinic at LGI.

Previous experience in Genitourinary Medicine or management of STIs/contraception is desirable. However, a full induction programme will be provided. You will gain comprehensive experience in all aspects of this speciality including STIs, contraception, HIV and other medical genital conditions at this large teaching hospital.

If with an on-call commitment you will join a registrar rota for acute HIV medicine / Infectious Diseases covering inpatient HIV/ID beds at SJUH and so experience in managing acute unselected medical take and MCRP (or equivalent) is highly desirable.

About us

Both the Leeds Sexual Health and HIV outpatient service multi-disciplinary teams are friendly and dynamic. The two services are separately commissioned but work very closely together and are both dedicated to providing high quality patient care. As both services have large patient cohorts you will benefit from a broad range of experience both in clinical exposure and MDT working. Both services have close links with multiple other services including community organisations, public health, primary and secondary care. There is ample opportunity to get involved with other non-clinic activities e.g. teaching and clinical governance including audit projects.

Job description

Job responsibilities

These are full-time/part-time locum for service (LAS) posts in Genitourinary Medicine with or without an on-call commitment. They are replacing vacancies at specialty registrar level in the Department and are therefore available immediately. These posts are fixed term until Feb 2024 in the first instance but may subsequently be extended until early August 2024 pending national specialty training recruitment outcome.

The Genitourinary Medicine service comprises the centralised HIV outpatient service based at Brotherton Wing Clinic, Leeds General Infirmary; and the integrated Leeds Sexual Health service whose city centre hub clinic is based at the Merrion Centre. Each department also houses offices and teaching areas.

Leeds Sexual Health (LSH) provides integrated Contraception and Sexual Health services and third-sector provision as part of a consortium between LTH, Leeds Community Healthcare Trust and Yorkshire MESMAC.

LSH provides over 60,000 contacts for sexual health and contraception care with daily mixed clinics comprising walk-in and booked appointments with self referral and triage for emergency cases. There is 6-day opening at the city centre hub including 8am-8pm access Monday-Thursday, plus further spoke sites operational around the city.

There are, in addition, over 7000 HIV appointments per year. Leeds Local Authority is the highest prevalence area in Yorkshire & Humber having exceeded HIV population prevalence of 2/1000 since 2012, and as such the department has built up a reputation as a centre of expertise for HIV/AIDS. LTH is the West Yorkshire HIV network regional centre with a local HIV cohort of 2200 including spoke clinic sites in Dewsbury and Wakefield. Most of these patients are outpatients but there is a significant in-patient workload which is managed on Ward J20 at St Jamess Hospital, led by the ID consultant team, with registrar and junior support from a combination of ID & GUM teams.

MEDICAL STAFF IN THE DEPARTMENT

The LTHT GUM consultant team: Dr Amy Evans (Lead clinician), Dr Sarah Schoeman (HIV lead), Dr Anna Hartley (Medical Co-lead, Leeds Sexual Health) Dr Harriet Wallace, Dr Janet Wilson (Research lead), Dr Emma Page (Virology), Dr Natasha Astill; HIV Consultant colleagues Dr Amy Tobin and Dr Vinu Nair & joint GUM-GIM Consultants Dr Khine Phyu and Dr Mike Ewens. Other medical staff currently comprise 4 NTNs (StRs), 1 Speciality Doctor, 1 IMT trainee,1 FY1 and 2 Innovative GP trainees.

Designated staff

Within LSH we work as an integrated team with a further 2 SRH Consultants and sessional/SAS grade Drs; plus 2 SRH StRs. There is a skilled and designated health advisor, nursing and HCA establishment with advanced nursing practice, research nurses and nurse prescribing in place.

In BWC HIV service we work with Infectious Diseases Consultants & StR/research staff. There is an HIV pharmacist, an HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist team and Health advisers who rotate through the BWC HIV outpatients and LSH to maintain continuity between HIV and SH services.
