Job summary
Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust are one of eight centres in England providing Primary HPV Cervical Screening. Our laboratory covers the whole of the North East and Yorkshire area.
We HPV test around 520,000 cervical screening samples using the high throughput Roche Cobas systems and screen approximately 80,000 slides per year. The laboratory is sited in a state of the art Pathology Centre in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Cytology Technical Manager , as the successful post holder, you will be required to:
- Work alongside the HPV Technical Manager and act as deputy to the North East and Yorkshire Cervical Screening Manager and share in responsibility in the management and organisation of all operational areas of the laboratory.
- Assist with the management of the financial and physical resources of the Cervical Screening Department to ensure service delivery in line with National, Organisational and Directorate policies.
- Provide specialist advice to clinical users regarding service provision and development.
The post holder will have a high level of specialist knowledge and experience in Cervical Screening diagnostic techniques and must have Health Professions Council (HPC) State Registration. Applications are invited from suitably experienced and qualified candidate holding either the NHSCSP Certificate of Competence in Cervical Screening or NHSCSP Diploma in Cervical Cytology.
Main duties of the job
- Use specific scientific knowledge pertinent to cervical cytopathology, HPV testing in delivering the service.
- Demonstrate Leadership at Departmental and Directorate level
- Maintain and promote the professional image of North East and Yorkshire Cervical Screening Services and Gateshead Health NHS Trust.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times in line with the Trust Information Management and Technology (IM&T) Information Security Policy.
- Work in compliance with the Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures and Health and Safety Policies.
- Work in partnership with the Departmental Manager BMS4 and Service Manager to provide continuous quality improvement in line with the Directorate service strategy

Oversee the development and review of laboratory policies and procedures
Ensure the laboratory follows NHSCSP guidance in relation to all aspects of cervical screening.
Support the implementation of new guidance or monitoring of new standards as published by the NHSCSP, RCPath or other relevant bodies as appropriate.

Advise on audit for the local cervical screening programme relevant to the role in the programme.

Contribute where necessary to any quality reports given to the local trust cervical screening business meeting, area team meeting or trust governance meeting and contribute to any annual reports relating to the local service.
