Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a well-respected and high performing team of Consultants at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead. This substantive post is obstetrically-focused, and the successful candidate would play an active role in high risk obstetric led antenatal care, including antenatal clinics and labour ward. We are looking for someone with an interest in either high risk obstetrics, maternal medicine, or fetal medicine to work alongside our current specialist obstetric team to help support our expanding service.

Main duties of the job

The main focus of this post will be in high risk obstetrics, working alongside our current specialist obstetric team to help support our expanding service. There would be potential opportunities to contribute towards maternal medicine lead role, risk management, obstetric guideline development and the Labour Ward Lead role. In addition to the Certificate of Completion of Training, ATSMs/SITM's such as Obstetric Medicine, Advanced Labour Ward Practice, Labour Ward Lead, Fetal Medicine, High Risk Pregnancy or Advanced Antenatal Care would all provide a suitable basis for the development of this post holder.

About us

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and forms part of the Trust's Surgical Business Unit. We provide a forward-thinking obstetric service, committed to high quality antenatal and intrapartum care, and work closely with other obstetric units in the region, as part of larger clinical networks, including maternal medicine, fetal medicine and preterm birth groups. We were recently rated as one of the top providers of maternity care in England in the highly-regarded CQC maternity survey. Our gynaecology services include a robust Rapid Access Clinic service, an ambulatory gynaecology service with see and treat abilities, specialist urogynaecology provision, as well as fertility consulting and full tertiary level IVF facilities.

This post presents an opportunity to work in a friendly and dynamic District General Hospital, in a predominantly obstetric role, whilst providing the variety of covering both obstetrics and acute gynaecology, with the expectation of minimal gynaecology clinics and theatre sessions sufficient to maintain skills appropriate to acute on call gynaecology.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Labour ward cover is in the form of a 5 day hot week, on a rotational basis. High risk antenatal clinics will be a major feature of this post, including Obstetric endocrine/Diabetes, maternal medicine and fetal medicine, depending on the successful applicants interests. The role would also include elective caesarean section lists, again on a rotational basis.

The on call provision at the QE involves both obstetrics and acute gynaecology, and involves a predictable on call pattern for both weekend and weekday on calls, supported by rest sessions immediately afterwards. We pride ourselves on being a supportive and flexible group of colleagues, and would endeavour to ensure that on call duties are within the skill set of the individual.

The post would be based around 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) as standard, including time for supporting professional activities, and the finalised job plan would be discussed and agreed upon with the Clinical Lead, following appointment.   • GMC registration
  • MRCOG
  • CCT (or equivalent, or within 6 months of completion of training)
  • Entry on to the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of completion of training)
  • ATSM demonstrating the ability to manage Labour Ward
  • Plus one other obstetric themed ATSM such as maternal medicine, High risk obstetrics, Advanced Antenatal Practitioner, fetal medicine, or equivalent experience.

Desirable

  • ATSM (or equivalent in high risk obstetrics, fetal medicine, maternal medicine or high risk obstetrics
  • Experience/qualification in obstetric scanning
  • Skills in External Cephalic Version
