Job summary
The successful candidate will be expected to manage the day to day running of the Critical Care Department. They will need to prioritise and ensure the delivery of safe effective nursing care, is provided to the critically ill patient and their families. They must also provide support to the nursing team by utilising excellent leadership and management skills, demonstrate effective clinical skills and competence, and communicate effectively.
The successful candidate is required to demonstrate the Trust ICORE Values, the responsibilities of the job description, and the person specification. Applicants must have evidence of the development of advanced intensive care skills and competence, effective leadership, and management skills, in line with the Band 7 role responsibility.
There is an expectation that the successful candidate has Vision and ensures that the nursing workforce evolves and grows with skills to meet the changing needs of the service. Importance is placed on team health and well-being, and a key priority will be for the successful Ward Manager to ensure that the nursing team are supported, developed, and empowered.
Main duties of the job
- Support the Critical Care Matron to provide effective clinical leadership and management within the Critical Care Department.
- Be a visible leader and lead a motivated and valued nursing team.
- Coordinate the operational management of the Critical Care Department.
- Hold professional accountability within the Critical Care Department.
- In line with national guidelines participate in the development and management of the Critical Care service.
- Assist the Matron in implementing and coordinating systems within the framework of clinical governance and patient safety.
- Ensure and provide high standards of safe quality care to patients within Critical Care.
- Continually improve patient experience.
- In accordance with the NMC standards, promote, and always demonstrate professionalism and ICORE Values.
- Provide effective management of the nursing team ensuring safe staffing and effective human resource management of the team.
- Be a clinical specialist within the Critical Care Department, and provide clinical management, advice, support, teaching and learning opportunities to all relevant personnel within the department, to ensure excellence in practice, and deliver safe patient care.

- To ensure team adherence to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and all mandatory requirements, policies, and procedures.
