Lead Pharmacy Technician for Clinical Services

Job summary

You will be responsible for the management and development of the pharmacy technician clinical services which will deliver responsive and patient-focused pharmaceutical care. This includes ward clinical services, the anticoagulation service and discharge lounge. You will ensure that all staff involved in the services are highly trained to work in accordance with Trust policy, departmental procedures, and regional and national standards of practice. You will be responsible for the efficient running of the services including staff management, recruitment, and performance management. You will work closely with other lead pharmacy technicians in the pharmacy team to achieve the best patient outcome both at ward and clinic level. You will be responsible for the management and development of processes to manage patients' medicines efficiently and effectively at ward level. There will also be a requirement to audit and develop your areas of responsibility.

Main duties of the job

- Line manage and supervise the team of band 5 clinical pharmacy technicians delivering the ward services to the wards, discharge lounge and anticoagulation clinics.

- Provide support to the Lead Clinical Pharmacists, Business Units and the Anticoagulation Service to ensure the clinical services provided by the clinical technicians meets the needs of the users and complies with best practice and legislation.

- Work closely with the Lead Technician for Education and Training to develop, review, and maintain ward-based training accreditation programmes for the clinical technicians.

- Support the training of the trainee and progressional technicians to develop their practice and understanding of the Trust's medicines optimisation service.

Job responsibilities

- Consider future developments for clinical pharmacy technicians within specialist clinical areas of the Trust, how these could be implemented and prepare an action plan for the Senior Pharmacy Board.

- Develop efficient communication channels with the rest of the pharmacy team to ensure a good understanding of the service and the roles and responsibilities of staff.

- Ensure that the principles of safe and secure handling of medicines are adopted and take part in quality assurance systems for pharmacy and medicines management services.

- Act as a pharmacy robot super-user and support the Lead Pharmacy Technician - Inpatient Services and Chief Technician when necessary

- Provide holiday and absence cover for the other team members.

- Work alongside the Medication Safety Officer, Senior Pharmacy Board and Specialist Clinical Pharmacists to ensure safe, effective, and up to date medicine management practices.

- Participate and co-operate to provide a 7-day pharmacy service, which includes Bank Holidays and late nights.

- Participate in the dispensary rota for accuracy checking technicians if applicable.

- Develop, implement, maintain, and promote local and national best practice policies, standard operating procedures, guidelines, and recommendations relating to pharmacy and medicine management within the organisation.
