Job summary

Applications are invited for a LocumConsultant General Paediatricians to join a growing team of General and Community Paediatricians at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead. The Paediatric team provide services from a dedicated Children's Outpatient department, as well as a 24 hour Children's Short Stay Assessment Unit and a Special Care Baby Unit.

Main duties of the job

The proposed job plan for the post will consist of up to 8.5 DCC PAs and 1.5 SPAs. For candidates wishing to work less than full time an appropriate job plan can be negotiated.

The posts include contributing to the general paediatric service with some daytime support of the acute service, general paediatric outpatient clinics and participating in the acute paediatric consultant on-call rota at the QE Gateshead. Applications from candidates with Community Paediatrics experience will also be welcomed.

Contribution to the ongoing improvement and development of services is an integral part of the consultant role but is particularly important to the department at this time when there is redevelopment of the out-patient services. The appointee will also be expected to contribute to all areas of teaching and training.

Candidates must hold the MRCPCH (UK) or equivalent qualification and have CCT in General Paediatrics or be in an approved training program within 6 months of expected CCT date at time of interview.

The Consultant will form part of the Consultant Team and will have a continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of the Directorate. In addition they will, undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients and with the running of the Directorate.

They will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management. Subject to the provision of the terms and conditions of service, they are expected to observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures.

The post-holder will have responsibility for the training and supervision of junior medical staff and will be required to devote time to this activity on a regular basis. The post-holder will also be expected to teach medical students and nurses as required.
