Are you a Nursing Associate, Assistant Practitioner or a Health Care Assistant with a Health Related Foundation Degree who would like to develop and progress in your NHS career?

If so, an exciting opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to train as a Registered Nurse through the Apprenticeship route.

Applications are invited from Band 2 - 4 Nursing Associates /Assistant Practitioners/ Health Care Assistants who have substantial experience working in care and have successfully undertaken a Foundation Degree in a health related subject.. You must have the certificates to evidence all of the required qualifications and it will be necessary to present these at interview.

This 18 month course will commence in September 2024. The course comprises of a mix of work place learning and Level 6 Academic Work. You must be prepared to work flexibly across a range of shift patterns and be able to travel to placements external to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site. You will also be required to attend mandatory study days at Northumbria University, throughout the eighteen months to complete the academic aspect of the program. Annual leave is planned into the curriculum and attendance at University as dates are compulsory. Additionally, as this is an apprenticeship, an end point assessment will be integrated into the end of programme assessment

Main duties of the job

  • For the duration of the apprenticeship the post holder will gain experience, skills and knowledge working in a range of clinical environments in hospital and in the community and make a supervised contribution to the delivery of care to patients.
  • Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse provide the highest standard of safe, effective and compassionate care through the effective use of evidence based practice, in line with agreed local and national standards and the NMC Code.
  • To work in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

Throughout the apprenticeship the post holder will develop the required theoretical knowledge, skills and competencies required to gain entry to the professional register.

Job responsibilities

Under supervision of the Registered Nurse contribute to the provision of individual patient care by personal participation in order to develop skills and knowledge required to enter the NMC register.

  • Assist and enable patients with all activities of daily living.
  • Maintaining personal hygiene and appearance, carrying out intimate aspects of care when required including those associated with elimination needs.
  • Assisting patients with nutrition including, where necessary, assistance to eat and drink. Ensuring liaison with supervisory staff regarding special dietary requirements and monitoring and recording of food and fluid intake.
  • Contribute to the movement and mobility of patients to maximise their physical comfort, referring and adhering to manual handling guidelines.
  • Carry out and record clinical observations and early warning scores, reporting findings to the Registered Nurse.
  • Develop skills associated with ensuring patients safely receive their medicines according to the prescription and plan of care.
  • Ensure that effective prevention and control of healthcare acquired infections is embedded in everyday practice and applied consistently by self and colleagues.
  • Maintain patient safety during the administration of treatments, interventions and investigations.
  • Ensure accurate clinical records are kept in line with current NMC guidelines on records and record keeping and Trust Policies.
