B7 Ward Manager in a Critical Care Department.
- Support the Matron to provide effective leadership both clinically and operationally within the Critical Care Department.
- Be a visible leader and lead a motivated and valued nursing team.
- Be responsible and coordinate the operational management of the Critical Care Department.
- Take responsibility for all professional issues within Critical Care.
- In line with national guidelines participate in the development and management of the Critical Care service.
- Assist the Matron in implementing and coordinating systems within the framework of Clinical Governance and Patient Safety.
- Ensure and provide high standards of safe, quality care to patients within Critical Care.
- Continually improve patient experience.
- Promote, and always demonstrate professionalism and ICORE Values.
- Provide effective management of the nursing team ensuring safe staffing and effective human resource management of the team.
- To be a clinical specialist within Critical Care, to provide clinical management, advice, support, and teaching, to all relevant personnel within the department and ensure excellence in the delivery of patient care.

Job responsibilities
- To ensure adherence to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct by self and team and ensure that the Critical Care Team practice in accordance with all statutory requirements, policies, and procedures.
- To exercise his/her professional skills in a manner congruent to the NMCs position statement on the Scope of professional Practice. To ensure that standards of acceptable professional behavior are always maintained.
- Provide effective leadership and management of the Critical Care team.
- Ensure the development and utilisation of research-based practices and assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and improves standards of care in Critical care. To also ensure that these are regularly monitored and adapted appropriately in response to patient/carer feedback, research findings and new practices.
- Collaborate with other clinicians to set, monitor, and evaluate standards of care for patients.
- To initiate required audits at departmental level and support the completion of focused regional benchmarking.
- To pro-actively manage all aspects of clinical risk, monitoring trends, and taking action to improve patient safety.
- Work towards achieving the Queen Elizabeth Hospitals NHS Trust objectives as laid out in the Nursing and Midwifery Strategy.
- Ensure the Critical Care Department is compliant with the Guidelines for the Provision of Intensive Care Service Safe Standards of Care.

- Ensure the safe control and custody of all drugs within the Critical Care setting.

- Establishes and develops effective communication with all disciplines, patients, and relatives. Has the ability to present complex, sensitive, and sometimes contentious information where there are significant barriers, that need to be overcome using highly developed, interpersonal communication skills.
- Takes the lead and manages the team in developing services within the department which contribute to overall service improvement which affect safe and competent practices.
- In collaboration with the Educational Facilitator contributes to a positive
learning environment to support all staff involved in the delivery of Critical Care Nursing. To also ensure that all staff attend mandatory training sessions.
- Ensure an effective, motivated, and competent workforce to facilitate and plan the delivery of high-quality patient care and to always provide a safe environment for the patients.
- Provides specialist, technical and clinical advice to patients and members of a multidisciplinary team.
