Job summary
Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Palliative Medicine. The post-holder will be employed by Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. Applications are invited for a 5 PA post to fill a vacancy.
Together with our three existing consultants in palliative medicine, the post holder will be part of an integrated palliative care team which works across both the acute hospital, St Bede's Unit (inpatient specialist Palliative Care Unit) and the community to develop a new innovative public health based community approach. It is envisaged that all consultants will cross cover each other to ensure continuity of clinical care.
Main duties of the job
The appointed consultant will be based with Gateshead Community Specialist Palliative Care team. All Consultants will work as a team covering each one area of the service with cross cover as required.

Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust Duties
- Joint medical leadership of the multidisciplinary palliative care team with direct support, including joint visits as needed with the Community Specialist Palliative Care Nurses.
- Involvement in planning specialist palliative care strategy and end of life care, especially the role of a compassionate communities approach throughout the Gateshead health economy
- Working flexibly within the team to provide advice and medical consultation for community patients as well as cross cover for hospital and St Bedes when other consultant colleagues are on leave etc
- Attendance at GP register meetings and education and support to GPs, CNPs and DNs in the care of patients with complex palliative care needs
- Promoting and participating in appropriate audit and research (as detailed below)
Other Duties
- To maintain continuing professional development in accordance with the requirements of the RCP.
- To prepare thoroughly for annual appraisal and revalidation and to work towards personal development targets agreed at appraisal.
- To contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching on behalf of their employer.
- Supervision of trainees during their attachment to the clinical team.
Research/ Compassionate communities
- Use a validated survey to measure the death literacy index of several services and community groups in one locality of Gateshead.
- Use the results of this survey to give a baseline of the current death literacy index in this locality.
- Arrange further meetings with community groups to ask what dying well looks like in Gateshead and analyse themes that emerge from this
- Engage with community groups to explore what existing assets there are in Gateshead and work together to develop an overview of what is available and what could be possible for the following headings
- What already exists in communities that can help with death, dying, loss and caregiving?
- What can communities do with a little help? (What do they want support with)
- What does the community want professional help with?
- Identify key people to form a development group and support a project manager to introduce and civic engagement programme.
