Job summary
Applications are invited for a full time (10 programmed activities per week) Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology with general medicine to join an existing team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead. Candidates who wish to work LTFT are welcome to apply.
The job plan will consist of 8.5 DCC PAs and 1.5 core SPAs. The DCC work will include out-patient clinics in endocrinology and diabetes, support for speciality and general medical in-patients, general medical on-call and clinical administration related to this. The appointee will be expected to participate in the general medical on call rota along with consultants from other medical sub-specialities. The job plan will be negotiable with time allocated for administrative work and supporting professional activity.
The appointee will be expected to contribute to the education program for Junior Hospital Doctors and take an active role in the Trust's Clinical Governance Strategy. They will also be expected to take part in clinical audit. There are also opportunities for engagement in the training of junior medical staff, medical students, and other groups of health professionals. There are well established departmental teaching programs with contributions from all medical specialties.
Main duties of the job
The advertised post is in diabetes and endocrinology [10 PAs] and is tenable on a whole time or less than full time (LTFT) time basis. Our trust is clinician led and management supported. You will join a team of motivated and dynamic clinicians who are valued and supported to reach their potential. Together with the existing consultants in diabetes and endocrinology the post holder will work within an experienced MDT team which includes DSNs, DSMs, a specialist pharmacist, research nurses, dieticians, and podiatrists. You will be part of a team committed to delivering safe and effective care. We are a DAFNE accredited service.
The post is available from August 2023 and is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, though all diabetes out-patient services are provided from Trinity Square Health Centre, a community-based diabetes centre in the centre of Gateshead.

The post-holder will have responsibility for the training and supervision of his/her junior medical staff and will be required to devote time to this activity on a regular basis. He/she may be named as educational supervisor, with specific responsibilities for assessment and appraisal under the relevant training scheme, as well as providing informal advice and support. The post-holder will also be expected to teach medical students, nurses and allied health professionals, as required.
