Main duties of the job
A unique opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Deputy Sister / Charge Nurse post on Ward 8 Cardiology , Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Ward 8 is a 21 bedded acute cardiology ward, it has 8 monitored CCU area within the ward. The role of the deputy sister alongside normal ward duties is to carry out prompt assessment and admission to ward 8 and facilitate streaming of these patients appropriately.
We are looking for a highly motivated Deputy Sister / Charge Nurse who will work in partnership with the Ward Manager and other band 6s to provide leadership and maintain and ensure high standards of care.
Post holders will be required to demonstrate an attitude which will enhance effective communication, multidisciplinary and multi agency working to provide specialist timely care for patients and carers.
The successful candidate will have a Diploma/working towards a degree in a Healthcare related subject, Teaching Certificate, excellent interpersonal, leadership skills and significant experience within cardiology and /or cardiac cath lab experience.

Job responsibilities
1. Management Aspects:-1.1 Provides direct management support to the Band 7, including day to day organisation of the unit, human resource aspects and non-staff elements.1.2 Takes continuing responsibility and accountability in the absence of the unit manager.1.3 Through participative management, fosters innovation and motivation within the team.1.4 To actively take a lead in risk assessment, monitoring and management.1.5 Contribute to the business planning/service development plans.1.6 Participate in annual cycle of performance appraisal and personal development plans for staff and teams.
1.7 Responsible for individual induction programmes for all new starters.
2. Education and training aspects:- 2.1 Support staff undergoing preceptorship/mentorship programme and facilitate and support clinical supervision. 2.2 To facilitate and participate in the units teaching programme 2.3 Support the units induction programme.
3. Clinical aspects:-
3.1 Lead the Work Stream Links on the unit.
3.2 Carry out an annual Clinical Practice Development Analysis on the unit and develop an action plan with the Band 7
3.3 Assist the Band 7 in the implementation and development of Safe care initiatives aligned with ward priorities.
3.4 Work closely with the Infection Control Team to develop audits and action plans to reduce units infection rates.
3.5 Working with the Nutritional Team to ensure optimal nutrition for patients whilst on the ward.
3.6 Carry out defined clinical requirements of the post in line with local policies and national recommendations.
3.7 Set standards of care and ensure that nursing practice is audited and research based and supports the clinical governance framework.
3.8 Provide clinical expertise and advice to other staff.
3.9 Maintain and improve professional knowledge, skills and competence to ensure the delivery of evidence based practice in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Councils Code of Professional Conduct and Trust Policies.
