The advertised post of Consultant Paediatrician is a locum post to start in December 2022 for at least 12 months with a maximum of 6 PAs available. This represents an exciting opportunity to join an established Paediatric Consultant team working at Queen Elizabeth hospital Gateshead. Although this is a General Paediatric consultant post candidates with an additional special interest are encouraged to apply.
Main duties of the job
The Consultant will join the Consultant Team and will have a continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the Directorate.
In addition, he or she will, undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients and with the running of the Directorate.
About us
The paediatric department of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is a busy medium sized Unit in a District General Hospital.
The Paediatric Unit (known as the Pea Pod) consists of a 24 hour short stay assessment unit made up of 8 cubicles located within the new Emergency Care Centre which opened in February 2015. All children referred to Paediatrics by their GP or attending A&E with a medical problem are assessed by Paediatric medical staff.
In addition to the Pea Pod there is Planned Investigation Unit for children attending for investigations and planned review. There is a children's out-patient department with 6 consulting rooms. The unit also has offices for secretarial and medical staff, a dedicated Junior Doctors room and a seminar room.

The new consultant will assume a clinical role within the department sharing all facilities equally with the present consultants. There will be appropriate office accommodation and secretarial support. There will be access to computing facilities including use of the Internet.
Clinical Duties
The post has up to 6 PAs available which includes contributing to the general Paediatric service with some potential daytime support of the acute service, a general Paediatric outpatient clinic and participating in the acute Paediatric consultant on-call rota at the QE Gateshead. Participating in the acute Paediatric consultant on-call rota would include covering the 8 cot Level 1 SCBU as well as general Paediatrics.Applications are also welcomed from candidates who have additional clinical interests that are in keeping with the needs of the service. An interest into quality improvement (audit lead) would be desirable.A draft job plan is enclosed, this would be finalised following appointment.Applications are welcomed from those who wish to work less than full-time.
