Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for specialist tobacco dependence advisors who are already working in mental health settings to further their skillset, or smoking cessation advisors working in community services to become specialist advisors. The post holder will also have the opportunity to become trainers on specialist smoking cessation training programmes, to deliver tailored behavior change interventions that is inclusive of a diverse group of patients, to work alongside multidisciplinary teams on the wards and raise their work profile across the trust and externally.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will help deliver the NHS Long Term Plan across South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust services by:

Promoting smokefree initiatives and health promotion campaigns across the trust.

Working collaboratively with ward and community teams to support patients to quit smoking during hospitalisation and post-discharge.

Delivering specialist smoking cessation interventions including tailored behaviour change sessions for smokers on the wards.

Delivering level 1 and 2 smoking cessation training for patient-facing trust staff.

Recording required smoking cessation data on RIO in line with local and national guidelines.

Providing regular impact and effectiveness report on the local data recording and management internally.

Key Responsibilities

The advisor will work with trust inpatient services to provide an evidence-based stop smoking service by:

  1. Offering smokers on the wards NHS-funded tobacco treatment services.
  2. Delivering 1:1 and group smoking cessation interventions for inpatients across all trusts wards.
  3. Establishing systems and processes to allow inpatients to access evidence-based smoking cessation interventions in-house and, in the community, and record results.
  4. Support to mental health staff to provide smoking cessation interventions.
  5. Building a culture whereby all service users are offered the opportunity to stop smoking and receive support to achieve a quit status.
  6. Strengthen and embed the Ottawa Smoking Cessation Model within inpatient wards.
  7. Ensuring that service users have access to psychosocial and pharmacological support to help them to cope with tobacco or nicotine dependence.
  8. Act as a subject matter expert, advising community services of the most appropriate support they can provide to their service users; based on knowledge of each local community stop smoking service provision and public health commissioning intentions.
  9. Key link and liaison between the inpatient wards, mental health community teams and our local stop smoking services.
  10. The post holder will be expected to establish therapeutic relationships with smokers whilst in hospital and will utilise referral pathways to support patients to access care post discharge in community settings.
  11. Liaising with mental health community teams, clozapine clinics, out-patient departments, Recovery College, and local stop smoking services including GPs and Pharmacies will also be required.

Delivering Smoking Cessation Level 1 and 2 training programmes for trust staff and equipping staff with appropriate skills to enable them to support patients to quit, reduce or temporarily abstain from smoking and making appropriate referrals to the smokefree team.
