Job summary

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to join the EDS Inpatient National Service (Avalon Ward) in our brand-new, state of the art hospital site (Trinity) in Tooting at the heart of South West London as a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist.

Avalon ward has a total of 18 bedrooms and the CQC review from 2022 resulted in 'GOOD' rating in all domains. Avalon team have also won a Trust-wide award for the 'Team of the Year 2022'.

The post holder will work 8 PAs alongside another part-time consultant psychiatrist. Each consultant will have a caseload of patients, proportionate to the time on the ward (usually 12 + 6).

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Locum Consultant Psychiatrist with the interest and skills in providing strong medical leadership to join our welcoming team.The role is being offered on a fixed term basis for a period of 6 months initially and with an opportunity to apply for a substantive post.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will provide medical leadership in the Eating Disorders Inpatient National Service (Avalon Ward). The Locum Consultant will work closely with a Consultant colleague who is also on the ward for 2 days of the week and with the Team Manager to ensure a safe, efficient and effective service.

The Locum Consultant will carry overall responsibility for the day-to-day clinical care of patients with eating disorders (in many cases Anorexia Nervosa): overall lead of multidisciplinary team, care planning including discharge planning, risk assessment and management, initiation of medication when appropriate, liaising with referrers and other colleagues, use of mental health act including reports writing, attending Tribunals, CTO meeting etc. There is an opportunity for teaching and clinical supervision of trainees.

This role is suited to a final year trainee and/or specialty doctors who are looking for their next step in their career as a Locum Consultant. The role is an ideal opportunity to progress you career and there is a possibility of the role being offered on a permanent basis in the future (subject to royal college approval etc.).

Qualifications

Essential

  • -Primary Medical degree.
  • -Full GMC registration.
  • -MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • -Included on the GMCs Specialist Register or eligible for such inclusion.
  • -Specialist Registrars within three months of completing their CCSTs (in child and adolescent psychiatry).
  • -Section 12 (2) approval of the Mental Health Act or be willing to apply for such approval once in post.

Desirable

  • Higher degree or additional qualifications

Experience

Essential

  • -Completed minimum of three years full time training in approved higher psychiatric training scheme
  • -A detailed knowledge of the Mental Health Act
  • -Therapeutic skills relevant to the management of people with eating disorders and comorbid conditions.
  • -Competence in the assessment and management of risk especially risks linked to eating disorders and of self-harm and suicide.
  • -Competence in psychopharmacology
  • -Competence in non-medication therapeutic approaches
  • -Experience of supporting families and carers in the management of risk and impact of mental illness
