The team provides care and treatment for working age adults (18-75) who live in Richmond and experience severe or enduring mental illness. Richmond RST works alongside Twickenham RST, with care provided according to GP/PCN alignment.

The post sits within a well-established MDT that works alongside a separate single point of access team and interfaces with Home Treatment Team and in-patient wards. There are also specialist teams for Early Intervention in Psychosis, Personality Disorder, and adult ADHD.

Main duties of the job

This role sits within our Community Service Line which includes all community based mental health teams, such as our Recovery and Support teams and Early Intervention services. These teams follow the Care Programme Approach (CPA) which involves having a holistic care and support role for a caseload of clients with complex needs. The Occupational Therapist (OT) provides standardised assessments and individual work and group work for clients across the team, to promote recovery goals with the focus of stepping down from Mental Health Services. The post involves working closely with the MDT, including carers and external community organisations.

The community Occupational Therapy team are committed to developing and supporting staff, to contribute to our evidence- based practice and to ensure the clinical effectiveness of our interventions. We offer a menu of high-quality OT interventions, which deliver consistency and clarity across the Community Service line. We are committed to offering an excellent service and actively promote Occupational Therapy within the teams. We follow the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) and provide staff with a centralised online system to access these assessments, manuals, and helpful guidance

Regular professional supervision will be provided by the lead Occupational Therapist in each borough, to focus on clinical practice and professional issues, whilst line management supervision within the team is provided by the team manager.

  • To manage an OT caseload of clients with complex needs, using evidence based /client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
  • To take responsibility for completing standardised assessments using The Model of Human Occupation and other frameworks as agreed by the Therapy Leads.
  • To provide occupational interventions to enable clients to step down intensity of support and work towards discharge from Community Mental Health Services.
  • To offer manualised interventions, both group and individual for example, GLOW (Graduated Living Outside of the Ward) and IPEL (Increasing Participation in Everyday Life) to help support step down of services for clients and preparation for discharge.
  • To offer Sensory Profiling and interventions to clients with sensory challenges.
  • To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of OT services within the Community Team, holding responsibility for defined projects.
