Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, innovative, and motivated band 8A senior clinical psychologist to work with young people in the borough of Merton who have been historically underrepresented in mainstream CAMHS.

The role has been developed to address service gaps and improve equity of access to mental health services for young people in Merton. It forms part of the developing CAMHS tier 2 provision based within the borough's specialist education support provision, Melbury College. This service aims to focus on providing early intervention for young people within alternative education provisions and their families, as well as providing consultation, training and support for the staff networks around them. The postholder will also have responsibility for band 7 Clinicians within the team.

As this is a new and developing position the postholder will have the opportunity to shape the role and service in line with service and stakeholder requirements.

We are a multi-disciplinary team working to promote wellbeing and provide treatment to children, young people and their families with mental health problems. The CAMHS team offers a range of assessments and treatments for children and young people presenting with mental health difficulties which impact significantly on daily functioning.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the delivery and development of the Tier 2 mental health service across the college's sites. The appointee will join a developing CAMHS team based within the college to offer trauma-informed assessment, intervention, consultation, and training to young people and staff across each section.

The role requires advanced skills in psychological assessment and formulation, with an understanding of how to incorporate challenging behaviour, additional learning needs, neurodiversity, and a range of social and contextual information within a trauma-informed framework, as well as the ability to share this and recommendations with other multi-agency colleagues.

The appointee will also work closely with young people's families and their wider networks, which includes partnership agencies such as children's social care, youth work provisions, and youth justice service. This aspect of the role is vital in ensuring appropriate linked-up working to contextually safeguard young people and their families.

This role requires the appointee to work within a multiagency context and hold skills in autonomously performing their role in a school/college setting whilst providing an offer of consultation and training across the Melbury college provision.

Job responsibilities

  1. To provide specialist psychological assessments to children who are referred to the Team based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the child or young persons care.
  2. To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of the mental health problems of children and young people who are based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of their problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy across the full range of care settings.
  3. To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological and psycho-educational interventions for individual children, carers, families and groups, within and across teams including community settings employed individually and in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
  4. To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options for children and their families in conjunction with other professional colleagues, taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family, group or system.
  5. To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of children whose problems are managed by psychologically-based standard care plans.
  6. To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan for the children.
  7. To contribute directly and indirectly to a psychologically-based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all children, across all settings and agencies serving this client group.

This includes organising case conferences and professional network meetings where appropriate.

  • oQualified Clinical Psychologist registered with the HCPC as an applied psychologist, or
  • oQualified Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist having successfully completed a training course recognised/accredited by the Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP) or equivalent, and registered with ACP, or
  • oQualified Systemic Family Psychotherapist registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) via the College of Family Couple and Systemic Therapy, or

Desirable

  • oTraining as part of a CYP IAPT collaborative in a recognised evidenced based approach.
  • oFormal training in the supervision of a psychotherapeutic modality.
  • oFurther training in a recognised evidence-based psychological therapy.

  • oConsolidated experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care, and in-patient settings.
