Job summary

This is a new post offers the successful applicant a unique opportunity to work in this dynamic and developing service in South West London. The post offers the opportunity to shape the development of the service and the role of the consultant role within the service.

The CAMHS Emergency Care Service provide therapeutic assessment, risk assessment and crisis planning for under-18-year-olds presenting in mental health crisis to A&E Departments and Paediatric Wards at St Georges Hospital (Tooting), Kingston hospital and St Helier Hospital(Carshalton). The team is staffed by experienced and enthusiastic nurses who work closely with A&E and paediatric staff and also local authority services as well as CAMHS teams within the Trust.

The Service operates 7 days per week, 9am to 8pm. Assessments take place mainly in A&E/ paediatric wards of local general hospitals whilst follow ups take place in CAMHS borough clinics or online. The team uses evidence-based skills to support meaningful and safe practice, such as Therapeutic Assessment, DBT Skills, Solution Focused Interventions.

The Trust is part of the South London Partnership which provides a CAMHS bed management for three local units and a CAMHS crisisline.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be a Consultant Psychiatrist providing medical leadership to the CAMHS Emergency Care Team and will provide medical consultant psychiatric advice to patients.

The applicant's primary role will be to support the clinical function of the team and to liaise with Borough based CAMHS consultant colleagues. The post-holder will work with the clinical lead to develop the develop the service and crisis provision across the Trust.

The postholder will be based within the team base at Springfield SW17 7DJ but will have the opportunity to use facilities in CAMHS borough teams or work remotely for some functions and will be expected to attend acute hospitals within South West London (St George's Hospital, Kingston Hospital and St Helier Hospital).

We are looking for a consultant with the interest and skills in providing strong medical leadership to take our services forward.The role is being offered on a permanent basis, alongside a tailored management leadership programme for those individuals who would be interested in pursuing this.

  • To work in partnership with young people, parents and carers to develop and implement effective and agreed care plans.

  • To provide guidance to the paediatric team regarding the appropriate legal framework for the provision of care for young people presenting with a mental health crisis including guiding consultant paediatricians holding RC responsibility under MHA.

  • The post-holder will be encouraged to contribute to teaching within the team and across the acute hospitals.
