Job summary

Halswell ward provides short- and long-term hospital admissions to male patients suffering from serious mental health problems such as psychotic illness, bipolar affective disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The ward is staffed by a multidisciplinary team who are responsible for assessing, managing, and reducing the risk to the person and community whilst in our care. The team comprises of mental health Nurses, Forensic Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Dance and Movement Therapists, Recovery Workers, and administrative staff.

The Ward provides admission under the Mental Health Act within both low and medium level of security which is generally agreed with the referring team/court/Ministry of Justice.

The team works in collaboration with referring teams to help the person move back to an appropriate community setting as soon as possible.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for supporting the Ward Manager in implementing and monitoring all policies and ensuring that the ward functions in line with the Trust and service line philosophy of providing respectful compassionate care that is of the highest quality. The post holder will also support the Ward Management to ensure that supervision and appraisal systems are robustly implemented and that the care provided is of the highest possible standard in line with the service's clinical governance framework. The Deputy Ward Ward Manager will support the Ward Manager with providing a safe environment within which all staff can deliver care and support to patients and their significant others. He/she will be equipped with the skills and knowledge and resources to ensure effective deployment of resources within agreed budgets.

Job responsibilities

  1. Working autonomously within the parameters of the role leading and supporting junior staff and wider care team to implement the delivery of quality nursing care, contributing to the physical, psychological, social, recreational and spiritual care in a recovery-focused way through therapeutic engagement and activities, and taking steps to address any issues that arise.
  2. Leading on and undertaking activities to ensure that the fundamentals of care are met - nutrition, hydration, hygiene, comfort, emotional and social support:
  3. Co-ordinating and evaluating collaborative patient centred care; getting feedback and improving plans with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
  4. Liaising and working positively with members of the multi- disciplinary team and partner organisations.
  5. Administering, and monitoring the side-effects of, medication; monitoring service user compliance. Safety; safe custody of medicines, sharps, clinical equipment, report all incidents following trust policy.
  6. Leading and supporting/teaching junior staff on risk assessment and risk management that involves making decisions based on knowledge of the research evidence, knowledge of the individual service user and their social context, knowledge of the service users own experience and clinical judgment.
  7. Supporting and supervising junior staff to develop the management of care needs through: Initial data collection, Monitoring of individual service user / patient progress, Feedback and discussion
  8. Producing reports and in-care reviews. Devising a plan of care and interventions in partnership with service user, carer and MDT.
  9. Coordinating junior staff and the wider care team in providing hands-on care to service users and evaluating processes of care delivered. This will include: Undertaking 1-1 engagement with service users in an honest, open and non- judgmental way.
  10. Recognising and valuing service users as individuals, acknowledging the importance of maintaining the service users respect and dignity at all times and ensure that the care provided respects equality and diversity.
  11. Ensuring the monitoring and recording service user clinical observations are undertaken, such as physical observations and vital signs and treating or escalating as appropriate any signs or symptoms of deterioration or that does not fulfill the personal parameters to the relevant professional for treatment. Promote healthy lifestyles and give health promotion advice and support.
