Job summary

Ruby Ward is excited to receiving applications from highly motivated, skilled and enthusiastic Band 5 RMNs who would like to join the team in substantive positions as staff nurses.

The ward is a 10-bed female Medium Secure Unit for those between the ages of 18 and 65 with diagnoses of mental health disorders. Currently located on the Springfield Hospital site, Ruby Ward is a Forensic in-patient service of the Southwest London and St Georges NHS Mental Health Trust, Springfield Hospital, Shaftesbury Clinic. We are also part of the South London Mental Health Partnership (with SLAM and Oxleas) and Quality Network for Forensic Mental Health Services sharing learning, expertise and innovation and improve the quality of care and treatment of service users and the development of staff.

We provide a comprehensive range of services for patients with mental disorders who are detained under the Mental Health Act and cannot be treated in open mental health settings because of their level of risks. We provide short- and long-term hospital admissions to female patients suffering from serious mental health problems such as psychotic illness, bipolar affective disorder, paranoid schizophrenia, personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. We also provide admission under the Mental Health Act within low level of security which is generally agreed with the referring team/court/Ministry of Justice.

Main duties of the job

If you are successful with your application, you will be working alongside our MDT, formulating treatment plans, as well as conducting daily risk and mental state assessments of patients with a variety of different mental health diagnoses.

You will be taking the lead on admissions and discharges of patients liaising with community mental health services, families and carers, and other third parties.

We are looking for nurses who will work holistically with service users to ensure excellent patient-centred care aiming towards a safe discharge into the community.

We would expect you to be passionate about mental health - working in line with the Recovery Model, our Trust Values, as well as being able to work collaboratively.

About us

The team include dedicated mental health professionals comprising mental health nurses, health care assistants, occupational therapist, doctors, psychiatrist, activity coordinator and a psychologist. The team has a culture of supporting new and existing staff, seeking to establish a solid foundation of knowledge of forensic mental health treatment, as well as an understanding of what it takes to fulfil this role safely.

About our locations:

Ruby Ward is located at the Shaftesbury Clinic, Building 10, within the impressive grounds of Springfield University Hospital in Tooting, London. However, we would be moving to the new build following completion later in the year. The location is easily accessible via the Northern Line (Tooting Bec Station) and via private transport. The Trust provides subsidised parking fares for all our substantive staff. Our main site can be accessed via Tooting High Street and Trinity Road where staff can easily access a range of shops, cafs, restaurants and a fuel station
