Highly Specialist Clinical/ Counselling Psychologist

This role can be for newly qualified Band 7 psychologist or experienced psychologist to be appointed at Band 8a.

We are excited to recruit a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist to a new position that enables a smooth transition of young people from childrens' to adult services. The role is part of the Sutton and Merton Complex Needs Service that offers treatment to people with complex emotional needs. The role will focus on transitions and the needs of 18-25 year olds and their families.

Sutton and Merton Complex Needs is an MDT including Clinical and Counselling Psychologists, however we also have strong connections with Clinical and Counselling Psychologists in adult and child services and you would form part of that professional network.

We welcome applications from final year or newly qualified Clinical / Counselling Psychologists Trainee Clinical Psychologists, with less than 18 months post qualification experience, who could progress from a Band 7 preceptorship to a Band 8a in this post. For preceptorship posts, there will be dedicated CPD funding.

Main duties of the job

This post offersa number of opportunities for further training and development; for example, to train in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), to develop this new CAMHS transitions role, develop family interventions and focused work for 18-25 year old people. In addition, you will take a lead in the assessment and engagement of young people with complex emotional and relational needs.

The person recruited would need to be able to develop excellent relationships with the young person and their families/carers to enable trust to be developed to facilitate engagement and understanding of their difficulties.

The person recruited would also need to be able to work across the different teams involved in transitioning their care.

You will be working in a multi-disciplinary team, but will also have regular opportunities for support and working with other Clinical and Counselling Psychologists.

This role is primarily based at our Sutton Base which is a friendly space with a wide variety of teams and professions, but there will also be travel to Springfield University Hospital in Wandsworth.

Our Trust headquarters is located within the impressive grounds of Springfield University Hospital in Tooting and we also operate in nearly 100 other locations throughout the UK. This is easily accessible via the Northern Line (Tooting Bec Station) and via private transport. The Trust provides subsidised parking fares for all our substantive staff. Our main site is located immediately next to Tooting High Street where staff can easily access a range of shops, cafs and restaurants.

The role will be to work within Sutton Borough to enable transition of young people from Child to Adult Services with an emphasis on those with complex emotional and relational difficulties that may meet criteria for a diagnosis of Personality Disorder. To achieve this the post hold will work closely with CAMHS colleagues and Sutton Adult Services.

The role will include developing a family programme for the families to be involved in that transition, and is part of a wider transformation programme meeting the needs of young people who access mental health services. The postholder will be providing highly specialist psychological assessment and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) at the same time as offering advice and consultation on clients psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to other, non professional carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the teams policies and procedures.

To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the service.

The Trust also supports staff to attend Health Education England funded training in a variety of interventions and has expanded the delivery of EMDR therapy over recent years, and this is another area for potential development. TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Doctoral level training in clinical/counselling psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS
  • o Registered with the Health & Care Professions Council

Desirable

  • o Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology
  • Training in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings
  • o Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course with presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
  • Experience of working with people who experience severe, complex and long-term mental health problems
