Job summary

The Nurse Education and Clinical Skills Team is responsible for the development and educational programmes run within the Trust for the nursing workforce. This is an exciting time to join our team.

There has been investment in the team and in supporting a clear Nursing career pathway within the Trust. There have been a number of changes in nursing workforce development and education and the post holder will be a key person in supporting the non-registered workforce professional development across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Lead Development Nurse for Band 2-4 Workforce and the Care Certificate Lead, the post holder will work across the nursing clinical areas at SWLSTG, in partnership with Higher Education Institutions and other stakeholders to:

  • Increase the provision of training for healthcare support workers new to the organisation,
  • Deliver cost effective, high quality and evidence based/good practice education and training programmes for clinical skills training using a range of effective teaching and learning methods
  • Design training and learning activities that meet quality assurance and performance management requirements both internally and externally.
  • Deliver a range of theoretical and practical clinical skills training to healthcare support workers using a range of effective teaching and learning methods, meeting learner needs, in a range of settings (classroom-based, work-based, team training), assisting them with putting theory into practice.
  • Work with senior clinical colleagues, managers and supervisors to establish mechanisms for enhancing, developing and assessing the quality of healthcare support worker learning. This may include signposting to functional skills training.
  • Develop knowledge of the Trusts educational opportunities to support development of HCSWs and the career pathways available.
  • Deputise for the Band 2-4 Workforce Lead and Care Certificate Lead as requested including to undertake investigations and advise on complaint matters.

Our hub is based at Tolworth Hospital in borough of Kingston close to a number of shops and with good transport links close to the A3 and a bus ride away from Surbiton station, which has fast connections to Clapham Junction and London Waterloo.

  • With the Care Certificate Lead, to increase the provision of training for healthcare support workers new to the organisation, e.g. Care Certificate, ensuring that provision meets Trust core education requirements, national and government requirements for service delivery in a responsive, appropriate and cost-effective manner.
  • Deliver cost effective, high quality and evidence based/good practice education and training programmes for clinical skills training using a range of effective teaching and learning methods, meeting learner needs, in a range of settings (classroom based, work based, team training). Design training and learning activities that meet quality assurance and performance management requirements both internally and externally.
  • Work with Care Certificate Lead to support senior clinical colleagues, managers and supervisors to establish mechanisms for providing, enhancing, developing and assessing the quality of healthcare support worker learning and professional development.
  • Provide continuous support to the healthcare support workers in the first 6 months of joining the Trust and signposting to Functional Skills/Higher Development Award (HDA) programme.
  • Develop effective working relationships with managers, supervisors, education leads and others to ensure effective communication and support of healthcare support workers completing their Care Certificate. Work with managers, supervisors, education leads and others to address issues of concern with staff performance or the quality of supervision/the learning environment.
  • Critically evaluate & develop the programme in response to internal & external policy/practice changes, complaints, course evaluations and staff feedback.
  • Develop knowledge of the Trusts educational opportunities to support development of HCSWs and the career pathways available.
  • Ensure all education and development activity promotes development in diversity and recognises health inequalities.
  • Deputise for the Band 2-4 Workforce Lead and Care Certificate Lead as requested including to undertake investigations and advise on complaint matters.
  • Contribute to the management of specific pre and post registration nursing development initiatives regarding workforce retention, development programmes and new nursing roles.
  • Ensure timely and accurate information analysis and reporting to Senior Nurse Development Lead on the Nurse Development Programme work streams.
  • Support and contribute to the completion of audits in a timely manner with HEIs.
  • To lead in raising clinical standards and develop a programme that focuses on the induction and ongoing development of the non-registered nursing workforce.
