Specialty Doctor, Laurel and Rose Wards - Full time 10 PAs

Main duties of the job

This post has been filled by a locum in the past and we now wish to recruit substantively.

We are looking for a Specialty doctor with S12 approval to join the teams on Laurel and Rose Wards, 2 of our acute psychiatric wards at Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton. Laurel Ward is for men only, and has 18 beds plus two 'surge' beds for periods of high demand; Rose is a female ward with the same configuration. The wards have a full multidisciplinary team including consultant, two trainee doctors, specialty doctor (0.5 wte per ward, this post), psychologist (0.5 wte), OT, specialist nurses, activity workers, healthcare assistants, ward clerk and ward manager. Along with the other acute wards in the Trust, it is in preparation for seeking AIMS accreditation in the next 1-2 years.

  1. Attending the 9am daily handover meetings on Rose or Laurel (days by arrangement with the teams) and running MDT meetings in the absence of the consultant.
  2. Supporting the junior doctors and consultant psychiatrist on Rose Ward by providing senior medical input into assessment and management of patients, preparation of Tribunal reports and giving evidence at hearings, and writing discharge summaries as required.
  3. Ongoing monitoring of the mental health of inpatients.
  4. Coordinating Mental Health Act Assessments of inpatients as necessary.
  5. Liaising with CMHTs and other agencies and working with the Ward discharge coordinator to ensure timely discharges.

  • -Full GMC registration.

  • -Experience of adult acute psychiatric inpatient care.
  • -A detailed knowledge of the Mental Health Act, the functions of the Mental Health Review Tribunals and Hospital Managers' Hearings
  • -Experience of writing reports of and attending Managers' Hearings and MHA Tribunals.

  • -Prior experience of working with service users with complex needs including challenging or offending behaviours in general adult, PICU or forensic settings
