Senior Staff Nurse - Paediatrics

The closing date is 10 October 2025

Job summary

We are looking to recruit band 6, Senior Staff Nurse, to our growing team, to help us achieve the best health outcomes for the babies, children, and young people of Hackney.

Starlight Children's Ward is a general paediatric ward caring for children from 0-16 years of age with a variety of conditions including bronchiolitis, asthma, sepsis, cellulitis, diabetes, and meningitis as well as day case surgery. We undertake level 1 and level 2 high dependency care and can provide training, support, and access to high dependency care courses to develop your clinical skills. We have close links with the child and adolescent mental health team and provide care for children and young people experiencing mental health difficulties. We also have close links with the children's community nursing team, allowing us to promote early discharge where this is clinically safe, enabling patients to continue with treatment in their home, i.e. ongoing iv antibiotics.

Our Ward Manager, Practice Development Nurse and Clinical Practice Facilitator are available to support your development on a day-to-day basis and can provide opportunities for you to undertake trust development training focusing on areas such as leadership, undertaking appraisals or recruitment and interview techniques.

Main duties of the job

Main duties include:

  • To support the Ward Manager in the day-to-day running of the unit and in achieving team objectives.
  • Uses clinical expertise and specialist knowledge base to work in a collaborative way to extend the role of nursing to meet the needs of children, parents and families.
  • Act of role model to develop and encourage harmonious relationships and professional rapport within the department and with other disciplines, departments and external agencies.
  • Working in conjunction with the Ward Manager and Practice Development nurse to ensure that nursing practice within the ward is of high standard, evidence based and clinically effective.
  • To work in conjunction with members of the medical team in delivering the highest quality care to our patients.
  • To act as a team leader for a given group of nurses within the ward. This will involve providing mentorship for them, undertaking appraisals and working with them to achieve their professional development goals.
