Job summary

We are inviting applicants who have experience working with children and young people with a mental health condition to join our paediatric team on Starlight Ward. Children and young people are increasingly being admitted to the acute hospital setting in mental health crisis both with and without an acute medical need. The post holder will be supported by the NEL network Paediatric Mental Health PDN team.

This is a new and exciting role which will contribute to the development of our team of dedicated Children's Nurses and wider team, providing them with the skills to confidently and safely care for this group of CYP.

This role will include the support, education and supervision of the children's nurses, doctors and health care assistants. You will ensure that SOPs, policies and guidelines are up to date and as well as ensuring that the environment, facilities and materials available are suited to the needs of our children, young people, and their families. You will work closely with our CAMHS and CEDS colleagues to coordinate pathways from admission through to discharge, engaging also with our emergency department and other areas within the hospital where CYP receive treatment.

This is a fixed term full time post for 1 year with potential for a substantive role going forward following review. Part time applicants will be considered with a minimum of 30 hours over 4 days.

The post holder will be supported by the NEL network Paediatric Mental Health PDN team.

Main duties of the job

Key duties:

  • To ensure the best care provision to the children and young people with a mental health condition admitted to Starlight Ward
  • To facilitate the development of staff with regards to mental health training
  • Monitor the level and standard of work undertaken by the ward staff
  • Working alongside the CAMHS crisis and eating disorder service
  • To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating of specialist car
  • Review and develop policies and procedures in relation to children's mental health
  • To provide support, advice and education to Starlight Ward and as necessary to the emergency department and to build knowledge and skills of staff within these settings in the care and treatment of children and young people with mental health difficulties
