Job summary

This post has been created to support and develop the Urology service at Homerton University Hospital in line with the needs of the department. This will be a 12-months contract. The opportunity to proceed to Substantive Consultant is available, with funding secured The successful candidate will be working as Locum Urology Consultant in general Urology (adults) at Homerton Hospital, in emergency and elective setting. The appointed candidate will have access to mentoring with the clinical lead and when required, arrangements can be made with other colleagues. There is an outpatient and surgical service at Homerton Hospital. The successful candidates will undertake 2WW urology diagnostics, elective theatre lists and clinics, including face-to-face/remote Clinics and regular scheduled MDT meetings. Operating sessions will be arranged both locally at Homerton and in the NEL Urology Hub that Homerton Urologists may support as required. The Urology department currently offers an electronic 'Advice and Guidance' service to local GPs and the successful candidate will have an allocated weekday to support this service.

Main duties of the job

The department is committed to the continued improvement of the service and the new Consultants will therefore be fully involved in service planning and development issues and will be expected to take an active role in the management of the service.

Job responsibilities

  • Consultant will be responsible for the diagnosis and management of patients seen in the Urology Department, a special interest in stone surgery and some experience in reconstructive urology would be advantageous.
  • Consultant would be encouraged to develop the service.
  • Consultant will be expected to run their own clinics, including specialist clinics and operating theatre sessions within the boundaries of accepted professional standards.
  • Consultant will also be responsible for in-patient and emergency work as required.
  • Consultant will be expected to develop day and in-patient elective surgical procedures, manage outpatient clinics, and take an active interest in the management of the specialty.
  • Consultant will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of their clinics.
  • Consultant will undertake administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and the running of their clinics or department. The successful applicant will be expected to participate fully in the medical audit arrangements.
  • Consultant is also be expected to concern themselves with the professional development of their trainees and allied health professional colleagues.
