Main duties of the job

Providing direct care to women, birthing people, and their families under the guidance of registered practitioners. Assisting with assessments of healthcare needs and executing delegated responsibilities from the midwife. Executing care tasks for women, birthing people, and babies as part of routine care, following appropriate training. The post is advertised as a Band 3 role subject to the following: successfully completing the care certification within the six month probationary period of employment, during which you will be paid Band 2 or providing a copy of your completed care certificate which has been reviewed during the recruitment process and determined as meeting the accepted standard Upon successful completion (or accepted evidence) of the Care Certification and completion of the probationary period of employment, you will be promoted to NHS AFC Band 3 Failure to complete the Care Certification within this timeframe may result in termination of employment

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To complete identification and security of the baby, in collaboration with the midwife.
  • To discuss with the mother normal appearance and range of changing stool and micturition in the health term new-born
  • To recognise and report to midwife potential signs of neonatal jaundice and be able to perform a blood test for jaundice
  • Promote skin-to-skin
  • Support parents in recognise feeding cues
  • Inform parents about the benefits of breastfeeding Support effective positioning and attachment of the baby whilst breastfeeding
  • Support parents to formula feed including: - demonstrating how to make up formula and the risks associated with this - explaining storage and maintenance of formula feeds
  • Assist doctors with performing abdominal ultrasound scans
  • Assist doctors with performing transvaginal scans
  • Undertake venepuncture
  • Complete data entry
  • To make client appointments in line with agreed care pathways and guidelines and record these in the agreed manner
  • To follow up on women/people who DNA, in line with agreed care pathways and guidelines and record these in the agreed manner
  • Take and follow up on blood and microscopy tests-feed this information back to the Midwife to assess finding
