Job summary

We are looking to recruit an outstanding, forward thinking and motivated Speciality Doctor to join our microbiology team delivering our clinical microbiology and virology services. The post presents an excellent opportunity for an experienced clinician with an understanding of microbiology to join our dynamic team committed to the delivery of the highest standard of care.

The Trust has an excellent Learning and Development department resulting in opportunities for personal development. Study leave for CPD is supported and assistance with funding is provided up to an agreed limit.

As a trust we support flexible working, this post is a full-time permanent post, but we will consider accommodating flexibility including part-time working for the right candidate.

Key interdependencies for the microbiology service includes: -

  • Clinical liaison service, including strong links with critical care
  • Laboratory support
  • Infection Prevention & Control team
  • Antimicrobial stewardship

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to do the following:

  • Clinical liaison with all grades of hospital staff and general practitioners on investigations and interpretation of results relating to the treatment and prevention of infections.
  • Liaison with the Consultant Microbiologists and bio-medical scientists regarding diagnostic methods, examination of specimens and management of infections
  • Authorisation and interpretation of the full range of Microbiology results including serology / virology.
  • Specialist clinical advice on reference tests is sought from the relevant Reference laboratory.
  • Daily ward visits, plus participation in appropriate clinical ward rounds e.g. Intensive Care, Diabetic foot MDT, Patient at Home service
  • Liaison with Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) staff, and Public Health England staff and as appropriate. This includes participation in outbreak management.
  • Participation in the Trust antibiotic stewardship programme including liaison with pharmacy colleagues and the CCG antibiotic stewardship programme
  • A 1 in 3 on-call rota with the two Consultant Microbiologists. Cover is by telephone and is off site. Weekend and Bank holiday cover is also provided off site.
