Job summary

The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust are looking to appoint a Trust Doctor CT1/2 Level CST equivalent in General Surgery to join our busy General Surgery team.

The Trust has an outstanding record in preparing trainee surgeons for the exam and helping them progress to higher surgical training. A recent Deanery visit recognised the high standard of training in General Surgery and confirmed that the SMART criteria set by JCST are met by the surgical trainees in the hospital

Main duties of the job

To work with the teams within the General Surgery department to deliver safe patient care. You will work a 1:11 on call rota and rotate between the subspecialties in General Surgery - Colorectal/Vascular/General and Emergency Surgery.

You will also work alongside and support the more junior members of the team.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. To work a full shift rota in General Surgery on a 1:11 rota
  2. To work across all teams within Surgery on a rotation basis for 6 months at a time.
  3. To assist the Specialist Registrar in the treatment of all cases under their care
  4. To be involved in allotting the duties of the FY1 doctors and supervising their clinical work and note taking
  5. To visit all patients under his/her care every morning (except weekends when not on call) and make such additional visits to particular patients as requested by the FY1 doctors or Ward Staff
  6. When on call, to be responsible for the supervision of the FY1 doctors and for the care of all surgical patients on the Wards. He/she may be required to give a surgical opinion on the other patients in the hospital
  7. To accompany the Consultants on their ward rounds and attend outpatient clinics and operating lists unless specifically excused
  8. To perform minor operations unsupervised. However, any major procedure must be supervised by SPR or consultant
  9. To be responsible for checking the completion of the discharge/audit form on every patient and ensuring that a discharge summary accompanies each patient leaving hospital
  10. To see that any surgical patient, who takes his/her own discharge contrary to the advice of the Consultant staff, signs a statement to that effect and will inform the patients General Practitioner by telephone of the situation
  11. To assist his/her consultant with the teaching of medical students
  12. To familiarise himself/herself with their responsibilities in respect of the mobilisation of hospital resources in the event of a major disaster/incident
  13. He/she shall be subject to the general rules for junior medical staff and shall obey such instructions as the Trust Board shall, from time to time, issue through the Medical Staff Committee
  14. He/she may be asked to perform extra duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant, in consultation where practicable with his colleagues both senior and junior
