Job summary

We're looking for an exceptional, inspirational, dynamic and highly experienced senior midwife whose role is key to lead and support midwifery practice. You will be the lead for midwifery led care, providing expert clinical knowledge and practice; this will include working across the Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS), supporting choice and personalisation, and improving choice, quality and midwifery care.

You will have an in-depth expert knowledge in midwifery practice, being clinically credible and transformational in your approach as a midwifery leader. You will negotiate, problem solve, think strategically and be able to build effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders. This is our first consultant midwife post and you will have autonomy in implementing this new role, embedding this within the organisation and developing midwifery led care and public health.

Main duties of the job

There are four distinct role functions of the consultant midwife:

  • Expert practice
  • Professional leadership and consultancy
  • Education, training and professional development
  • Research, audit and evaluation, practice and service development

You will have the responsibility for working in close partnership with the Director of Midwifery, Lead Consultant Obstetrician, Matrons (Inpatient and Outpatient), midwives and other medical staff. The Consultant Midwife has a specific role in leading on initiatives and developing strategies to promote optimum health and well-being for women in the pre conception and the maternity pathway.
