Job summary

A fantastic opportunity is available at the Princess Alexandra Hospital for a Locum Consultant Geriatriciann to join the Trust on a fixed-term basis. We are looking for an individual who has a special interest in the care of the elderly who is passionate about delivering high-quality care. You will:

  • Input into an evolving surgical liaison pathway.
  • Manage a group of inpatients (10-15)

Main duties of the job

Working closely with the multi-disciplinary clinical team and the management team within the area, you will take the lead on service innovation and improvement to drive forward the delivery of services according to the changing and increasing needs of the population. This will involve close liaison with surgical department and community services to develop new and innovative ways of working.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide high quality inpatient and outpatient services which are coordinated and person-centred to the elderly population served by PAH.

To lead and motivate the multidisciplinary team within his/her ward area in order to deliver effective patient-focused interventions and timely discharge planning.

Coordination with the surgical department with trauma meetings, POPs clinic, M&M meetings, national audits etc.

To create and maintain excellent working relationships with their own team, management team and external agencies such as community providers and CCGs.

This includes effective communication in line with the Trust values (patient at heart, everyday excellence, creative collaboration).

To engage fully in development of services to meet the anticipated future challenges of the ageing population.

To lead on and drive forward innovations within service area.

To support consultant colleagues in the department in the delivery of their services where necessary.

Education and Research

One day per fortnight will be dedicated to providing research or quality improvement activity on behalf of the Trust and Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) School of Medicine, and the Visiting appointment and portfolio detail will be commensurate with the experience of the successful candidate. Teaching will be expected, for medical students from our university sources (including Queen Mary University of London and Anglia Ruskin University School of Medicine) attached to the firm. Participation in the Directorate Audit programme and preparation of personal audit projects are also expected. We have an exceptionally well run Postgraduate Medical Centre with a full spectrum of training opportunities for every grade of doctor as well as support to access electronic learning resources.

The Trust Supports the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. The post-holder, as they commence in post, will be provided with mentoring from a consultant colleague within the Medical Healthcare Group. The post-holder under the direction of the Associate Medical Director will be responsible for continued professional development and take part in continuing medical education activities, in line with the requirements of the appropriate Royal College guidelines to maintain standards of performance. They will participate in an annual appraisal and maintain a personal development plan agreed at this appraisal.

A key responsibility of the post will be the education of all those caring for elderly patients. This will include junior medical staff, members of the multidisciplinary team, General Practitioners and their Primary Care Team, and the public in liaison with health promotion professionals. Clinical research is encouraged within the Trust and sufficient time is allowed within the proposed consultant work schedule to enable the post holder to undertake research projects in his/her area of interest.

The postholder has a statutory obligation to attend all mandatory training. This includes; Health & Safety, Manual Handling, Fire Training, Information Governance, Safeguarding and Customer Care.

There is a weekly Grand round and all clinical staff are encouraged and expected to attend. There is also a separate Geriatric journal club.
