Job summary
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking a highly motivated and patient-focused Orthoptist to join its multidisciplinary eye care team. Applications from Newly qualified candiates or those with limited experience will be strongly considered. The post holder will provide high-quality orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and management for patients with disorders of binocular vision, ocular motility defects and visual development conditions across a range of clinical settings.
The Orthoptist will work collaboratively with ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses and other allied health professionals to deliver safe, effective, and evidence-based care within outpatient clinics and specialist services. The role includes the assessment and management of paediatric and adult patients, contributing to service development, clinical governance, and training of students and junior staff.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong clinical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a commitment to delivering compassionate care aligned with the Trust's values. Preceptor ship scheme is available if required.
Main duties of the job
The Orthoptist will be responsible for the independent assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with disorders of binocular vision, ocular motility abnormalities and visual development conditions, including strabismus, amblyopia and diplopia, across both paediatric and adult services. The post holder will deliver safe, effective and patient-centred care within outpatient clinics and specialist ophthalmology services, working closely with ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team. Duties include maintaining accurate clinical records, contributing to clinical decision-making, supporting ophthalmic clinics, and participating in audit, service evaluation and quality improvement activities. The Orthoptist will also be expected to support the training and supervision of students and junior staff, adhere to Trust policies and professional standards, and contribute to the delivery of high-quality care in line with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust values.
