Job summary

We are thrilled to invite applications for the Band 7 Unit Manager for the Oncology Outpatient Clinics based at Charing Cross Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital.

The Oncology Outpatient Clinics see a wide variety of patients with different types of cancer, including gastrointestinal (upper and lower), breast, hepato-pancreatico-biliary, endocrine, gynaecological, lung, brain tumours and urological malignancies.

The post holder will be responsible for delivering an efficient and effective service within the Oncology Outpatient Clinics, ensuring patients receive excellent care at the highest standard. You will work closely with members of the MDT and provide visible leadership.

The successful candidate must have an interest in Outpatient Nursing and working with patients who have cancer. They should be enthusiastic, motivated, compassionate and they should be able to work well independently and as part of a team. Excellent communication skills are essential.

This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday. The post will cover both Charing Cross Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital Outpatient Oncology Clinic.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure high standards of patient care at all times challenging and ensuring others challenge poor practise, in accordance with the NMC Professional Code of Conduct.
  • In collaboration with senior members of the Divisional team provide assurance that the standards set out in the relevant Nursing & Midwifery strategy and direction of Nursing & Midwifery for the Trust are delivered at Department level.
  • Ensure agreed systems and process to consistently provide safe, effective high quality patient care and embed a culture of improvement, focusing on the Trust's harm free indicators, measuring practice and using variations in the data to develop local improvement projects are in place in the Department.
  • To have local open and transparent communication channels that support the team to do the right thing for people we care for, to be bold when they have good ideas and to speak up when things go wrong.
  • Manage the delegated budget for the department, working closely with the Lead nurse, General and Finance managers, working to achieve financial balance.
  • As Line Manager, take responsibility for human resource issues including appraisal, personal development, sickness absence, disciplinary and grievance, recruitment and selection and personal career development delegating as appropriate.
  • Be aware of existing research findings as they affect the physical, social and psychological care of patients with palliative and end of life care needs.
